Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* analyse a group situation in terms of the theories
* justify the use of therapeutic groups
* explain the role of the nurse in group therapy
* explain the role of the group in work situations
* design a group therapy intervention and facilitate a group in your own workplace
* discuss the ethical considerations for using groups as a therapeutic modality
Syllabus
The subject will cover the following topics:
* Theoretical framework of interpersonal dynamics framework (Maxwell). * History of therapeutic modes in mental health/psychiatric nursing and other disciplines. * Theories of institutionalisation. * Theories of group dynamics (Yalom). * Group therapy modalities: therapeutic community (eg. R.D. Laing and Associates); self help groups (eg. AA, Compassionate Friends, GROW). * Adjunctive groups (eg. reminiscence therapy, reality orientation, validation therapy). * Analytical groups (eg. for specially selected clients with insight, life review). * Music therapy, art therapy, drama therapy, sociodrama and psychodrama. * Family therapy.
