08 Oct Observing others (different form of nonlistening)
10719Journal
This journal entry requires you to draw on your insights and your powers of observation with family members, friends and/or coworkers to describe examples of nonlistening. This is a different observation experiment from the discussion board and there are some similarities in that you will set the scene. In this assignment, you will explore various types of nonlistening whether it is with your family or even a work situation, and could be extended to a virtual situation such as a zoom call. Students can use one family gathering or multiple instances where nonlistening is present and real-life examples need to have details. As in the discussion board assignment, please observe body language and the situational context: For example, were the individuals seated at a meal? engaged in a discussion? watching TV “together?” etc. Here you can describe with terminology (proxemics, synchronicity, haptics, immediacy, silence, etc.) and set the scene with relevant examples. You do have to set the scene as in the discussion board — but also explain at least four types of nonlistening. In the course of a business day or being at home with family, we often experience all types of nonlistening.
In addition, your textbook provides six forms of nonlistening and this will be important to evaluate with not only terminology but vivid examples:
pseudolistening
monopolizing
selective listening
defensive listening
ambushing
literal listening
After reviewing them, think of a time when you and/or family members engaged in nonlistening (or didn’t engage in listening, depending on how you look at it).
This journal entry requires you to draw on your insights and your powers of observation between you and your family members, friends, enemies, or colleagues. As in the discussion board assignment, please observe body language and the situational context along with the relevant dialog. This is often a personal and eye-opening observational exercise. Describe the situation. What was the result of the nonlistening? What could have been done differently? What conclusions do you draw from this observational exercise?
