Write a 1000-word Opinion Piece, suitable in style for mainstream print journalism publication, on any theme or topic of your choice. Opinion pieces provide an opportunity for writers to express a subjective view. Note the line of separation between a newspaper?s editorial column and its opinion pieces. Opinion pieces are usually written by featured columnists; they often use the first-person (but excessive use of the pronoun ?I? should be avoided). Editorials are written in the third-person and, almost always, are unsigned. They convey the view of the newspaper, and not an individual. Compared with editorials, opinion pieces are more relaxed in style, using contractions, personal recollections, anecdotes, occasional quotes, and (where appropriate) shafts of disdain and humour.
Opinion Piece Structure
There is no ?right? way to structure a well-written opinion piece. But there is a wrong way. Your opening should engage and intrigue your audience. Your reader should want to read on. Your argument should be logical, rational and easy to follow. Do not rant. Make a reasoned case. Assume your reader does not agree with you and you must persuade him or her that you are right.
The following template will help you, if you do not know where to start:
1. Your opening paragraph(s) states the problem or situation and sets out the position you are taking on the issue.
2. The next few paragraphs present arguments in support of your position backed up by examples, case studies, statistics and other evidence.
3. Next, you acknowledge the counter arguments against your position. You present those arguments and supporting evidence, together with your response and refutations. Remember your position should dominate the article.
4. The final paragraph summarises and emphasises the stance you took at the start, in different words.
The examples contained with the study guide indicate, in each instance, that the writer has taken a strong, sustained stance; yet there are elements too of humour and provocativeness. These writers have not assailed their readers with an outpouring of passion or polemic; rather, they have tried gently to persuade and, at times, to entertain.
You will often find that it is possible to read the opening and closing paragraphs of an opinion piece to gain an overview of what has been written. This is because many opinion writers observe the template presented above and use their ending to echo their opening. Note also that, although the thrust of this course is creative, your path towards inspiration in thought and creativity in expression does demand the observation of some mechanical issues. Prominent among these are: conventional spelling, punctuation and grammar; clear expression; adherence to approved media publication style.
