Introduction and Identification
Personal Development Plans are most often undertaken by individuals as the supported and structured process for reflecting upon their own learning, achievement as well as planning for their educational, personal or career development. However, my personal development plan will mainly functions in helping me learn as well as developing my strengths more effectively and through undertaking personal learning with a purpose of attaining particular goals (Grit, 2009).
In my personal development plan in have identified the career path to becoming a banker in the future. This is mainly because I am currently studying finance which will definitely lead me into a career in the financial sector but my preference career is becoming a banker in one of the Saudi Arabian bank before pursuing a masters degree in project management which will help me to open my businesses. Meeting with career advisors and the faculty as well as the information from the internet has greatly helped me to identify which the course I am pursuing will lead me to. This banker career which is my main focus will definitely require both skills and personality strengths all of which will collaboratively contribute to a successful banker. Such important skills and personality strengths involve communication skills, analytical skills, interpersonal skills as well as honesty/integrity and hard working.
Skills and Competencies Needed to Survive and Thrive
In order to become a successful banker I will be required to possess various skills and competencies that will always be enabling me to be able to perform my duties effectively from day to day (Grit, 2009). Such skills include to have commercial awareness, communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and motivation, numerical analytical skills, and networking. Commercial awareness is a very vital competency which is very important in enabling someone to be able to efficiently survive as well as surviving in the banker career. Thus it requires one to be aware of what is going on in the outside commercial world other than the employers place of work.
Communication and interpersonal skills are also other skills that are very crucial to survive in this career (Grit, 2009). This is due to the fact that it involves encountering different types of people on daily basis hence you are required to be in a position to communicate with those people very effectively. Moreover, interpersonal skills are also necessary since they dictates the way you will be handling the clients. Hence these two skills are very crucial in ensuring that you can effectively communicate and relate with the clients. However, there is also the need to be enthusiastic and motivated since the career has more workload so in order to survive well you have to be able to be always enthusiastic and motivated even when there is a lot of pressure (Grit, 2009).
Analytical skills are also very essential since this career involve carrying out numerous analytics. However, they are supposed to be more of numerical analytical skills since there are numerous financial calculations to be done on daily basis (Grit, 2009). Moreover, networking is also very crucial since this career will involve interacting with clients on daily basis hence there is need to sustain strong networking links with them which requires someone to possess strong networking skills in order to successfully survive. All the above discussed skills apart from hearing about them I have also seen them in work and thus I am totally convinced that I must possess them to be successful in my career.
Self Assessment
Self assessment is also another important task that is usually crucial in the personal development plan. This is because it enables someone to identify his or her weaknesses and strengths all of which are crucial in the entire process. For instance, in my self assessment I managed to identify the skills that I am currently possessing. This include effective goal setting skills, ability to market myself well, effective analytical skills, excellent organizational skills as well as adept in the ability to effectively use the financial applications such as the Bloomberg and Thompson.
All along I have always possessed very excellent ability to set my goals in a very effective manner. This enables me to set the goals I want to achieve within a specified period of time. This skills keeps me moving since it always facilitates me to evaluate what I have achieved within the set time. I am also capable of marketing myself very well through self expression hence I am able to market myself effectively.
I am in possession of effective numerical analytical skills that will be usually very effective in making sure that I cope very well with the financial calculations that are carried out on daily basis. Moreover, I am in possession of excellent organizational skills which helps me in adequately organizing my work efficiently and always. However, the ability to use various finance applications such as Thompson and Bloomberg is very vital in my career as a banker. However, since I am anticipating to do my masters in project management which will later enable me to open my own businesses it will be crucial to improve on my networking skills which are not as I expect them to be.
Five Step-Action Plan
In order to achieve my key desired state to get the career as a banker and be effective and successful I have decided to undertake five strategic steps in my action plan such as pursuing my masters degree in project management after my bachelors degree in finance, join social clubs for networking, register for a local class in communication and interpersonal skills, volunteering in various projects and joining a financial institution in Saudi Arabia before establishing my own business.
Doing a masters degree in project management will enable me to be able to effectively manage my business through the knowledge and skills that I shall have acquired hence it will be very crucial to do it (Grit, 2009). However, joining social clubs is among the most effective way of networking since Ill end up establishing new friendship relations as well as sustaining them. These established friends will also be more likely to be my future business confides and clients. However, in order to improve my communication and interpersonal skills Ill register for a local class which will help me to drastically improve on them hence putting me in a good position to be able to effectively relate with all the clients I encounter. Also in order to perfect my project management skills Ill start volunteering in various projects so as to familiarize myself with all what is required various projects management. Moreover, joining a financial institution in Saudi Arabia will also be another strategy of attaining my preferred condition professional situation.
