Cases of employees of companies or the public service stealing from their employer are not anything new the world over. There are some employees that simply cannot be trusted. Others have been entrusted with so much only to end up stealing from the very people who have trusted them (Kana, 2018). The reason for them engaging in such uncivilized behaviors is mostly because of being greedy. There are a number of terms that can be used to describe this kind of employee’s misconduct such as corruption, pilferage, embezzlement, stealing, peculation, fraud, defalcation and employee theft.
Corruption is a term that is used to refer to some sort of dishonest dealings amongst people or the act of accepting bribe (Yatich & Musebe,2017). This is normally carried out by people who are in power and will want to receive an extra fee to do a service that would have otherwise been free or worse still those in power engaging in unscrupulous behavior and taking public funds for private development (Kana, 2018). Embezzlement may be defined as falsely using funds for one’s personal gains or for the unintended purpose.
Peculation is whereby a person wrongfully appropriates a public property that was entrusted in their care for their own personal gains (Yatich & Musebe,2017). It may be called embezzlement of public property. This is normally done by public service officers who may have the tendency of taking public property for example houses that belong to police officers being used for generating rental income by senior police officers.
Defalcation can also be termed as the wrongful appropriation of funds that happens when a person is in charge of a certain engagement (Kana, 2018). Fraud is more like corruption, and stealing or even employee theft. Employees may also take advantage and use funds or property for their own gain. They could also be involved in scandals because of having dealings with outsiders and use the opportunity to squander money from their organization.
