Let’s again consider HOW we can help children and use this lens to create new roles in new settings. Examples include: What organizations exist in your area that have a mission focusing on children and trauma that would be enhanced by incorporating Child Life services? Does your community have a school reintegration team that supports not only a return to school after medical needs, but also return to school after traumatic events? Have there been any events in your area where this kind of service/support would have benefitted local children? What services exist in your area for children experiencing maltreatment (such as courts, foster/kinship care, or adoption)? What kinds of support systems should be in place that would allow you to bring Child Life to more local children?Provide information on at least one resource in your community (including name & website if available) that includes what this agency provides to your community and how it impacts children or families coping with grief. How could Child Life philosophies impact this agency and how they provide supports to local children and families? Student Responses paigeI live in a pretty small town, so we do not have many resources focusing on children and trauma, but we do offer support groups every now and then. The session offered seems like it would just be a regular group session. I have not been to it, so I do not know exactly what happens during it, but I am sure incorporating Child Life services can make a positive impact. I am sure not every child there enjoys going to the group sessions offered, but by making it more fun and incorporating Child Life into the sessions more children will want to go which can help decrease negative long term affects on children dealing with trauma. My small community does not offer a school reintegration team. I do not remember anything like that when I was in school, and now looking it up online I can’t find a school that offers this program or one similar to it in my area. I did however, research what a school reintegration team is and I personally feel all schools should have this program. I do know my high school worked with my brother after he got in a terrible accident several years ago. He was in the Pediatric ICU for a week and then the normal Peds unit for another week. Once he was out of the hospital he could not return to school for a very long time, but once he did the school worked with him by setting up a 504 plan and several other things. Having an official school reintegration program probably would have benefited my brother more, but the help he received from the high school following his accident was amazing.My community and the ones surrounding it actually have several programs for mistreated children. We have safe houses that provide shelter for children experiencing abuse or who are runaways. We have foster care and adoption services, along with many other programs that help mistreated children. All of these programs exist for teenagers as well. I think it would be incredibly effective incorporating Child Life in these safe homes. I know they have plenty of volunteers, because I have volunteered at a runway house a few times, but having a Child Life Specialist at these houses could create a positive impact on a child’s life. The Curry House is a house for runaway children that I volunteered at. It helps children dealing with all kinds of problems. Some may be coping with grief while others may be dealing with abuse. Incorporating Child Life at The Curry House can help the children who are living there feel better about themselves and what is going on around them. According to the Corner House, Child Life Specialists have knowledge of abuse and resources to help abused children. Many people have no clue what a Child Life Specialist is. I didn’t even know what one was or what one did until my Sophomore year of college. I think my community and many others can benefit from having a CLS becoming apart of the school system, support groups, or home for mistreated children. The first step to do this would be to get the word out of what a CLS is since many people don’t know. I used to think that every city had groups available for children and trauma but I actually realized that this not accurate information. I am fortunate to live in a city where we have a lot of group therapy, churches and a lot of support. When it comes to child life services, we are commonly known to offer these in our hospitals. I happen to work in one of the hospitals in which child life support is offered. Child life services are offered at my hospital as well as group therapy for children and adolescents. My hospital offers a lot of activities and events for children. We are well known for during activities for children are are currently being treated in our hospitals as well as for those who just finished treatment and are back to good health. I think that is why we are well known across south Florida. One of the most commonly used service for not only adults but for children as well is our care and counseling service. Care and counseling basically offers various group session such as bereavement and depression. The good thing about this service offered in our hospital is that they offer services for children too. ‘Another component of Care & Counseling is the availability of psychological and cognitive assessment to help in the educational placement and treatment of children and adolescents’ (Baptist Hospital of Miami, 2018). I have personally witnessed most of the services offered to children and they discuss many different topics. It is also convenient because in the case the patient is currently receiving treatment for their health but also needs mental health therapy, it is in the same hospital and child life is also available in case the child does not want to attend therapy. That is the great thing about our hospital that there is a lot of flexibility. Besides our hospitals we also offer services in our downtown area which are related more with children and family services. I think it is a bit more personal and more commonly known that if a patient needs therapy for whatever mental state they are in, our hospitals do an amazing job at offering these services.
