Chapter 23:
“Geography is the study of places, cultures, communities, people and topography. An understanding of geography enables you to move beyond the words on a page” (Everyday Bible Study pg. 131). Geography is important when trying to get a fuller understanding of the Bible and its passages. Studying the location from the time when the passages were written helps a reader to identify cultural references within the passages. A great example of this is in Revelations 3:14-22. Within this passage are cultural references, that to a reader who hadn’t studied the geography from these passages would “fall flatly” or would cause them to “over-spiritualize” the passage because they don’t understand the true meaning.
Chapter 24:
“A careless study of the scriptures that ignores historical context will almost alway lead to a misuse or misunderstanding of Gods Word” (Everyday Bible Study pg. 136). Historical context includes; the author, audience, and the word they lived in. You will understand the authors purpose when the “who” within the Bibles passages is identified. “Studying historical context means that you are seeking to understand all that you can about who wrote the book, to whom is was addressed, and what role the social and cultural components of their world play in understanding the content” (Everyday Bible Study pg.137). Identifying the world they lived in is important when determining the social and cultural references that played a part when the text was written.
Chapter 25:
“A good understanding of context is a vital part of proper interpretation and a healthy preventative to misinterpretation” (Everyday Bible Study pg. 144). Misinterpretation of the Bible often results from the readers failure to interpret the context of the Bible and those who intentionally twist the Word of God to fit their way of thinking. Contextual analysis creates a boundary for the interpretation and application of the Bible. The microscopic method allows the reader to move from seeing the “general purpose and structure of a book to a narrow study of a verse or passages within that book. (Everyday Bible Study pg. 144). Reading passages within their immediate context is the best way for a reader to interpret the Word of God correctly.
Chapter 26:
Word study is a vital step when it comes to understanding the Bible. Words tend to change over time. Whether it’s changing their meaning, disappearing from our vocabulary completely, or having the ability to define many things differently. The best example given for this, is the word “surfing”. Many years ago the only meaning this word had was surfing the waves. Nowadays it can define the action of surfing the waves, Internet or television channels. This evolution of words also applies to the Bible. Within this chapter it gives you five key steps to conducting word study. Select your word, Identify all places where this word is located, determine what this word could mean, determine what it actually means, then check your work. These five steps help determine the original language it was derived from as well as its original meaning at the time is was used in the passages, several resources are available to aid in word study.

Chapter 23- Studying the geography of the Bible is important to understanding its context. The place, cultures and people make up elements of geography. One should consider the physical location of the city Paul addresses in his New Testament writings. Was the church far removed from Rome or within Rome? Who would have made up the body of that church and what was their culture? As we follow Mark’s stories we can think about distance and terrain. How great or small was a certain river or sea that is referenced? A Bible atlas is highly recommended to increase the multidimensional lessons of the time.
Chapter 24- This chapter encourages the study of historical timelines, cultures of the period along with social conditions. These factors greatly influence the significance of a text. Think of how the book fits into history and what had occurred before the writing. What was the world like for the author or audience of the scripture? Customs such as circumcision lend knowledge of the characters of a story. For example, in Matthew 18:21–35, Jesus tells the parable of the unforgiving servant and refers to two kinds of currency. Chapter 25-This chapter asks readers to perform a literary analysis as the Bible is studied. The literary analysis is divided into 2 parts. The genre of a passage is the first consideration and the context is next. Contextual analysis is important to understanding the messages of the Bible. An applied comparison is looking at a slide through a microscope. If the power of the microscope is increased you see a small particle up close. You need to view more than a small area to know how the particle relates to the whole specimen.
