17 Jul PORTFOLIO OF COMMUNICATION
Final Project: Portfolio of Communication (10–15 pages)
This Final Project is a portfolio consisting of the communication skills that you learned throughout this course. As a criminal justice professional, you will likely encounter situations where you need to engage in effective communication and this portfolio will act as a guide and future reference source to succeed in those situations.
Portfolio of Communication Samples
The Portfolio will consist of a 1–2 page overview where you will explain how all of the portfolio components (see below) are linked together and applied to the field of criminal justice.
All of the materials that are included in the portfolio should be revised versions of what you submitted previously and should incorporate Instructor feedback.
Your portfolio will include the following items from the course:
Revision of the PowerPoint presentation from Week 2. This is the final version of the PowerPoint presentation and you need to include a written narrative explaining what you changed since the original submission or your PowerPoint and why.
Interview questions that were submitted during Week 7.
Annotated bibliography that was submitted during Week 8.
Report writing assignment that was submitted during Week 9.
Graphs and visual aids that were developed and submitted during Week 10.
Brief PowerPoint presentation that was created and submitted during Week 10 (note that this presentation will not reflect instructor’s feedback).
Follow APA format and style.
Application: Conducting an Interview: Week 7
How are questions constructed?
How should they be sequenced?
How should questions be phrased?
Should open-ended questions be used?
What is active listening?
Is paraphrasing beneficial?
What if there are distractions in the interview location?
When a law enforcement agent interviews a suspect about a crime that has occurred, one effective interview technique is to build rapport with the suspect by asking relatively benign questions. After “befriending” the suspect, the agent then confronts the suspect head-on about the crime or, in some cases, the suspect may confess his or her guilt. Had the law enforcement agent not used effective interview techniques, the confession may never have occurred.
There are multiple interviewing techniques, just like this one, that can and should be used in order to gather as much accurate information as possible.
For this assignment, review the three video interviews comparing strengths and limitations of interviewer and interviewee skills in this week’s Learning Resources. Based on what you read in your Weekly Learning Resources, consider how interviewing techniques could be used to interview a person you might be interested in interviewing for this Assignment.
The Assignment (1–2 pages)
After reading your resources this week, create a list of questions and conduct an interview with a family member or a friend. Take notes on the responses given by the interviewee. Do not submit the interviewee’s name or responses. You must; however, analyze the responses in order to complete the assignment.
Submit the list of interview questions you developed. Be sure to omit any interviewee responses.
Explain the purpose of each question
Based on the interviewee’s responses, explain whether or not the questions were interpreted by the interviewee as you intended them to be interpreted
Explain any revisions you may make to the interviewing questions to make them clearer and more effective. If no revisions are necessary, explain why.
Using your reading assigned for this week, please identify the interview techniques you used during the interview and explain whether or not they were effective
Application: Creating an Annotated Bibliography Week 8
Annotated bibliographies are an effective tool used in the research of a particular topic or issue related to crime, criminals, or the criminal justice system in general. Creating an annotated bibliography forces you to read widely on a topic and begin to evaluate the quality of the research you are sifting through. While time consuming, a high-quality annotated bibliography can cut back on the amount of total time needed to write a report or article. It can also significantly improve the quality of the report or article. One of the key ways to create a high-quality annotated bibliography is through practice and repetition.
For this Assignment, examine the main steps needed to create an annotated bibliography and the type of material that should be included. You must review Chapter 10 of your course text and the Walden University Library resources. Then select a criminal justice topic to use for this assignment. Finally, select five peer-reviewed resources that pertain to that criminal justice topic.
The Assignment (2–3 pages)
Review Chapter 10 of your course text.
Review the provided Walden University Library Resources
Describe the criminal justice topic you selected
Provide a brief summary of the five peer-reviewed resources you selected
Explain why the resources you selected are most relevant to the criminal justice topic you selected
Create an Annotated Bibliography for each of the five resources you selected
Be sure to use proper APA formatting
Application: Writing an Effective Report in the Field of Criminal Justice: Week 9
The sooner you record an incident, the less likely you are to accidentally omit something important. If your report is written well and accurate, it is easier for others to understand and use to make more informed judgments and decisions. Familiarizing yourself with the different types of reports that are used in the field of criminal justice makes writing an effective report less grueling. Mastering the five W’s and H (who, what, when, where, why and how), preferred sentence construction, and direct statements help to enhance accuracy and readability of your reports.
For this Assignment, review the different types of reports that are used by law enforcement and by probation and parole officers. Create your own report using a hypothetical example of a crime that was committed or that pertains to a probationer or parolee. Then, examine any challenges you encountered when completing the report. In addition, consider how this type of report may be used in your current role or in a role in criminal justice in which you might be interested in working in the future.
The Assignment: (1 page)
Select a type of report (e.g., a police report, a probation report, or a parole report) that you find most interesting
Create your own report using a hypothetical example of a crime that was committed or that pertains to a probationer or parolee
Submit your report along with the following: (1–2 pages)
Explain any challenges you encountered when completing the report
Explain how this type of report may be used in your current role or in a role in criminal justice in which you might be interested in working in the future
Application: The Creation of Effective Visual Aids: Week 10
Developing the ability to transform a set of raw numbers, statistics, and data into an attention-grabbing and engaging visual aid that emphasizes key points can be a challenging, but worthwhile, exercise. There are a number of useful resources to help identify appropriate visual aids by the type of data, and how to use color to focus attention on key statistics. One type of visual aid is a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.
For this Assignment, review the video Two Student Presentations on the use of Visual Aids in this week’s Learning Resources. Explore how PowerPoint can be used to create an effective presentation. Consider other types of visual aids that can be used to communicate criminal justice data. Then, review the websites located in the Learning Resources, to help find your data needed for this Assignment.
To complete your Assignment (1-2 pages)
Find three sets of raw numbers from criminal justice resources. It is suggested you use the websites located in the Learning Resources, to find your data.
The data can address recidivism rates, gun control, victimization or any other topic of interest to you.
Then create Your own visual aid for each of the sets of raw numbers (for a total of 3 visual aids). These can include graphs, tables, pictures, etc. Your visual aids must be developed on your own and are not taken from another source (This means you will be creating your own charts and tables. You are not copying an already created table or chart and turning it in. You must include the complete citation/reference for your submission and data).
At least one of your visual aids should be a PowerPoint presentation of the data. The other two visual aides might include tables, graphs, or pie charts
After you’ve created the visual aids, select 3 criminal justice settings such as policing, probation, courts, etc.
Then explain how the visual aids are appropriate to each of the criminal justice settings you selected.
Finally, describe the information presented in each of the visual aids you selected. Be sure to justify your responses using the Learning Resources and the current literature.
Then find the visual aid documents you saved as “WK10Assgn+first initial+last name” and click Open.
Be sure to attach all documents containing visual aids for the Week 10 Assignment before clicking Submit
