13 Jun PROBLEM/SOLUTION PAPER YOU WROTE THIS TIME LAST SEMESTER IN WRI 101
Further Information on the Research Paper
Unlike the problem/solution paper you wrote this time last semester in WRI 101, this essay is a source- driven argument. Once you’ve decided on a topic, you’ll be finding sources to develop your ideas. Your essay will then be a thorough examination of those sources and the ways in which they relate to one another to build your argument. Think of your essay as a forum in which various experts on your topic have a conversation and you become involved yourself as you comment on each of your sources’ points. You’ll use the techniques we’ve examined this semester :
Creating quotation sandwiches which introduce your quotes (or summaries, or paraphrases), then go on to explain them.
Metacommentary, which extends those explanations to give a really full picture.
Summaries which give the important points of your source, while at the same time indicating how you feel about the source material.
Transitional phrases between your points, at the beginning of each paragraph, that indicate that you are moving on to a new point that will further develop your thesis.
Integrating quotes into your own sentences, or using signal phrases to introduce them.
Citing all material that does not originate with you.
Feel free to use your response sheet answers for the sources from your textbook. You’ll find your critique paper useful too, since this current paper is essentially a collection of critiques on a single subject.
Don’t forget a couple of counter-arguments to validate your own argument.
Remember the important components of a good introduction: a lead-in (or hook), a strong thesis statement and a brief indication of what points you will be developing in the body of your paper. Don’t forget, too, to have a clearly defined conclusion, and, of course, a works cited page.
Here is a timeline of the steps you’ll be taking to reach the deadline of April 24th:
Start now to think about your topic and to research it.
Create a thesis as your argument emerges from your research.
Tuesday, April 3rd (changed from the April 5th date on your syllabus), proposal conference with me. Complete the topic proposal sheet and bring it with you to the conference.
Further research and writing of first draft of your paper for April 12th.
Thursday, April 12th an in-class peer review of your first draft. Please bring your draft to class.
Thursday, April 19th and Tuesday, April 24th, oral presentations, based on your paper.
April 12th to April 24th, writing of final draft and preparation of works cited page.
