If you do notdemonstrate that you have read and understood the content from the modules, you will notreceive a good grade. To get a good grade, you must show me that you have read andunderstood the content in the modules we have looked at so far. I will look at both your paperand your responses to classmates to determine how well you understood the material.Second, I am grading for critical thinking and analysis. How well do you form and support yourarguments with evidence from the course material or external sources? How much do youcontribute to the discussion with your classmates?Third, I am grading for the mechanics proper grammar, well-written paragraphs, answering allthe questions, correct formatting of sources (if you use external sources please use ChicagoStyle [1] to cite), and sufficient number of responses to classmates.Written Assignment InstructionsIn this assignment, you will apply lessons from cities around the world discussed in Module 7 toyour hometown/city. You may also draw from relevant material in Module 6. The lessons can beabout transportation, urban farming, green building, or any other aspect of cities. The aim is todraw on the rest of the world’s experience with sustainable urban development in order toidentify how your city or town could itself become more sustainable.Note to University Park students: For this exercise, please refer to your home town, not StateCollege, unless your home town is State College (indicate this specifically in your work if this isthe case).Note to students in or from rural areas: If you live in or are from a rural area, please choose a cityor larger town that you are sufficiently familiar with in order to complete the activity. If possible, donot choose State College.Part I: Write a paperTo write this paper, chose two cities which are used in Module 7 as examples of sustainable cityprojects. Write a 500-750 word paper which answers the following questions. Post your paperin the discussion forum on Canvas.1. First describe your hometown/city. You may chose any scale you like (from a smallneighborhood to an entire metropolitan area). What is the population? What is the urbandesign (e.g. pedestrian-oriented neighborhood, streetcar suburb, automobile suburb)? Is itprimarily high or low urban density? Mixed use or single use?2. Describe the two example cities you are using from the module. Why are these citiesrelevant to your hometown/city? How can the example of the city from the module offerideas for making your hometown more sustainable?You must engage at least three course concepts in your post, but you will get a better grade ifyou engage more. Remember engaging course concepts means defining that conept andexplaining how it helps you think about the theme of your paper.Part II: Discuss the topic with classmatesYou are also graded for developing a discussion with fellow classmates. I ask you to do thisbecause it is important to be able to communicate ideas with one another. This means you haveto listen, not just talk.Please read some of your classmates’ posts. Think about what they are saying. Post 3-5responses to classmates. You can respond to different classmates, respond to one classmatemultiple times in a discussion format, or respond to classmates who have responded to yourpost. I am grading for the quality of discussions.For this assignment, I would like you to use the discussions to further brainstorm ideas forimproving city sustainability. Offer your classmates additional ideas for improving thesustainability of their hometowns.
