Answer the following questions for this assignment. See your syllabus for grading rubric and details regarding this assignment. You will need to include a minimum of five peer-reviewed sources in this paper. Maximum 10 pages, not including references or cover page. Use 12 pt font and 1” margins, and APA 6th edition writing style.
Part 1: Answer this question
Using peer-reviewed references, describe some of the risk factors for suicide in gay, lesbian, and/or bisexual youth in the United States, and how these risk factors are different and the same across these three groups. Provide some data, with original sources, regarding frequency of suicidal ideation, frequency of suicidal attempts, and frequency of suicide completion in these groups.
Part 2: Choose TWO of these questions to respond to.
The author notes that categories such as ‘youth of color’ may “obscure distinctions among racial/ethnic groups,” according to researchers. Why is this an important point? What are the implications for social work of this kind of limited distinction?
Applying a strengths based perspective, discuss how the intersectionality of ethnicity and sexual preference can impact on the social network support of a young adult (aged 13-18). What kinds of protective factors does this kind of intersectionality provide? What kinds of risk factors are created or increased as a result of this kind of intersectionality? What does the peer-reviewed literature say on this topic?
What broader factors in society may play a part in suicidal ideation of these youth? Apply a theory to help explain why this is so (include peer reviewed sources to support your discussion).
The authors note that the data on which they are reporting may be “slightly outdated.” What are some of the reasons that this may be a limitation, from a macro social work perspective? Does that change the type of approaches that might be used to provide services to these youth? Why or why not?
Among the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, or questioning) community, there is far less representation of bisexual individuals, and there is research suggesting that adolescents who identify as bisexual may experience higher rates of depression, isolation, and violence. What kinds of community-level approaches might be taken to address this issue in Central Florida?
Part 3: Answer these questions in the last section of your paper:
1. What are the implications of these high risk rates for suicide, for social work? How can social service agencies change or improve their mission to help people like the ones who would be part of these groups? What does the social work Code of Ethics contribute to this issue?
2. What kinds of concrete community-level approaches could be taken, here in Central Florida, to address high suicide risk rates in LGBTQ youth? Provide explanation for why you make each suggestion and why you think it would work. Focu
