Auscultation techniques will be used in assessment of the neck. Examination of the eyes involves tests of visual acuity, visual fields, and extraocular muscle function. A penlight can be used to assist to with inspection of the external eye structures, anterior eyeball structures, throat, and mouth. An opthalmoscope is needed for examination of ocular fundus. Course Objective 5: Communicate with interprofessional health care teams for further interpretation and recommendations to promote patients’ health.
You will apply techniques of inspection, palpation, auscultation, and percussion in this module. It is important to refer to your textbook for the proper sequence of examination techniques in each area that you are examining. For example, when you are assessing the abdomen auscultation should be performed before palpation and percussion because palpation and percussion can cause an increase in peristalsis, which would give false auscultation findings. If it has been awhile since you have auscultated lung or heart sounds, you may want to practice on friends or family members.

Review of auscultation of the heart and lung sounds are available through the following links:
Normal heart sounds
Abnormal heart sounds
Bronchial and vesicular breath sounds
