Let’s Discuss: Markets
I’ve posted a lot of reading material this week (don’t panic, you don’t have to read all of it!) and am interested in what you think on these topics. This quarter I’m particularly interested in discussing how we can apply economic theory to the rest of our lives, and also how we can use our experience outside the class to be better and more critical consumers of economic knowledge. Economics is an evolving field, and I encourage you to think about ways that you can expand on what we’re doing in class- use your interests and expertise, read and think, talk to people, be reflective about your own choices.
I’d like you to use this week’s readings as a starting point. Read two or more of the supplemental articles and then use them to respond to one of the following discussion topics.
· Why do people engage in trade? If one trading partner gains, must the others involved in trade lose? Explain why or why not?
· Should countries impose limits to exchange to protect their citizens? Explain your position.
· Should everything have a price?
· Will markets lead to better outcomes? Explain why or why not.
Please note that I’m not looking for particular answers here- I’m hoping for a vibrant discussion on relevant and important topics. So be sure that your replies to other students further the discussion (and avoid “I agree, great point!” type responses, which won’t earn you any points.)
