Essay 1: Self Reflective
Read Hanif Kureishi's "My Son, the Fanatic," (p. 422). Then write a self-reflective essay about a serious argument you had with a parent, guardian or caregiver that still sticks in your mind today. What did the two of you argue about (problem or issue)? Why (cause)? Provide examples of what was said. How did the exchange of words make you feel? Have you and the other person forgiven each other? Why? Why not? Explain other outcomes of the argument. How did the argument change your life? What did you learn about yourself and about the other person? In addition to providing examples from your personal arguments, use examples from the story to help prove purpose of the argument you had and to show your growth.
The self-reflective essay should be two to three pages long. Use MLA formatting. As this is self-reflective, it must be written from the first-person perspective. The thesis statement must be the last sentence of the introductory paragraph. Be sure to include a title, introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion.

COMPARATIVE: Essay 1 (Explication with Research)
So, what is a comparison and contrast essay? Laurie Kirszner and Stephen Mandell, authors of Patters for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide, describe this type of essay as a piece of writing that compares how “two or more things are similar,” and contrasts “how they are different” (369). Purdue Owl, (see link below), offers the following advice concerning comparison and contrast essays, when “… discussing all similarities or all differences, you can use signal phrases like “another similarity” or “another difference.” When “discussing both similarities and differences, you can use a signal phrase like “on the other hand” to shift from comparison to contrast. (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/engagement/2/2/55/).
For this essay assignment, read the following:
Literature and Current Issues: Why Marry, pp. 554 – 570
Compare married life to single life and the supposed traps and freedoms that go also with either one. In the end, what do you want readers of your essay to learn after reading it?
Literature and Current Issues: Are Millennials Narcissists? Pp. 538 - 550
Compare Millennials to Generation Xers, or Millennials to Baby Boomers. You will need to define the terms, tell when each group was born, and explain their characteristics, (provide examples of how a Millennial may solve an issue as opposed to how a Gen-Xer would) for instance. What do you want readers of your essay to learn after reading it?
Your three to four-page comparative paper should be written in MLA formatting. It must be written from the third-person perspective. The thesis statement must be the last sentence of the introductory paragraph. Be sure to include a title, introduction, body paragraphs, a conclusion, and a Works Cited page. Provide two to three sources. You must use both quotes and paraphrases.
