This paper addresses the important role(s) that compensation plays in our society. The discussion on justice and economics was meant to help you think through some of the roles and/or issues that our society faces in regard to compensation. For instance, compensation affects one’s socioeconomic status–this then begs the question of whether executive salaries of 400 times what the lower level work makes is fair. Compensation also affects one’s education, standard of living, etc., etc. Given that compensation affects so many aspects of our lives and society, there are no right or wrong answers/topics to include in this paper. What is important is that you demonstrate that you have adequately reflected on compensation and its importance and provide a coherent treatise (which is also well documented/referenced) as the final assignment for this course.

You are being asked to THINK about compensation in a broad economic sense and thus its importance in our society. You might also consider the justice of compensation being structured in the way it is in our economy/society. This is NOT your typical “compensation as a functional area of human resource management” paper. The reason that you are doing this kind of paper is that true compensation experts would be broadly educated in economic theory and the role compensation plays in our economy. So you’re just getting a bit of an opportunity to focus on compensation from something other than the strict HR perspective. Unfortunately, in Business Colleges, all too often we focus on “profits” to the exclusion of other legitimate goals of organizations, like social responsibility or the role that employment places in society more broadly.

Your paper should be referenced, using APA Style, with at least 5 references beyond your text book. Online sources are not counted in the 5 references unless they are “online” sources like truth-out.org or nationofchange.org that actually provide reprints of articles from various journals (the beauty of using something like truth-out.org is that they provide summaries of articles that help you to determine whether the article is relevant to what you are researching; also, in using these kinds of online sources, you actually end up reading the original article and referencing the original source); you can find journal articles online via the UHD Library–those are okay as legitimate sources for the paper.
