This discussion is intended to provide a baseline for your organizational and personal security positions. Before 9/11, some organizations provided good security, but many had less-than-focused security. Assess your situation at work as well as your individual security, and let us know from your perspective how physically secure things are now.

As we progress through the course, keep in mind what your original perspectives were and how they might have changed.

How does private security differ from law enforcement in what it is able to do to protect and serve those for whom it works?

With the current knowledge that you have about physical security, take a look at your current place of employment and assess how physically secure your location is, and provide your comments on this issue.

Keeping in mind your assessment of the physical security at your current work location, what types of personnel security efforts does your employer use to enhance security at your organization? What types of factors must an organization consider when hiring employees?

Week 3 discussions

The authorized movement of personnel is a critical element of inner defense countermeasures. This covers employees as well as visitors. Thinking of your particular environment and the recommendations of how to control access and movement, describe how well it provides for the security of the facility and its contents. You should pay particular attention to how employees and visitors are identified, enter the building, move to/from authorized locations, and exit the building.

Since most organizations today use computer technology to get work done, what types of computer security threats do you see at your current place of work or places where you have worked in the past? What types of threats do you see personally on any home system you may have?

Week 4 discussin

There are many types of security threats to organizations, requiring law enforcement and private security to cooperate. What are some of these threats, and how should they be handled?

Why are risk analysis and management important? How are risks typically managed? How can you reduce risk? What are the steps you would support?

How is institutional security different from other types of security, such as retail security and event security?

Why is executive protection important to an organization?

Terrorist threats have become increasingly common. The government as well as all types of organizations in many industries are using programs for assessing these threats, providing countermeasures, and communicating with those affected.

What level of activity do you see in your organization or by your government representatives? How effective do you feel these actions are? What else should be done?
