Week 1 journal

We begin our business communication journey this week. With the foundation we’ve created, what does business communication mean to you? Think holistically about how communication impacts employees, teams, and an organization. How does this impact the way you will start to communicate with others professionally?

Week 2

To understand business communication better, find an individual who is presently employed in business with at least five years experience in his or her current organization. The person can be someone you know well–a parent or family friend, or a current coworker or supervisor. This should be someone you feel comfortable with, and an ideal person might also work in a career area in which you are interested. You may interview the person over the phone, face-to-face, or by email, and you are welcome to ask as many questions as you like. Some good starter questions are simple: What does it mean to be a “good communicator” in your company, industry and position? What communication problems or issues exist in your organization? Based upon the information you gathered, reflect on the answers you were given and what you learned about how to become a better communicator in your profession.

Week 3

Reflect on the methods used in writing an effective persuasive proposal we have discussed this week. Based on our discussions and course materials, find an individual who has written a persuasive proposal (for church, work, civic and/or community organization, non-profit or for-profit organization). Ask the individual about his/her experience; list 2-3 points you found most meaningful in your conversation. How might you incorporate these points in preparing a persuasive proposal?

Week 4

This week you wrote a business communications plan. Reflect on the purpose and scope that would address the following:

1. What are the advantages of developing a comprehensive communication plan to support a business or organizational objective?

2. What did you learn through this assignment that you will utilize in your professional life?

Week 5

Does the female gender communicate differently than the male gender? We discussed the manner in which each gender processed information this week, and we determined although the genders might process information differently, each gender arrives at virtually the same place. Based on our course materials and discussions for the week, what did you learn about communicating with a gender other than your own that you found will be most helpful in communication among the genders? Be specific.

Week 6

An effective oral presentation does not just happen – it requires a lot of research, planning, and work long before the speaker presents his/her information to an audience. What verbal and non-verbal cues did you find to be most effective? Think of a recent oral presentation you attended . . . what course materials did the speaker use and why were they effective?
