Exercise 1. Designing a Cultural Diversity Program

You are HR managers in a small US organization (200 employees) that has been experiencing a large increase in cultural diversity. Twenty percent of employees are from different countries and this number keeps growing. Unfortunately, there is no cultural diversity program in place so far. As a result of cultural differences, there has been a decrease in employee satisfaction and work motivation, and an increase in work conflict and voluntary turnover. You are to assist the company with designing a sound cultural diversity program that may help resolve the problems related to cultural differences!

Considering best practices in the business world (cultural diversity programs designed by Google, Coca-Cola, Reebok, etc.), please design a program that the company will be able to implement in the short run. Although you may be inspired to add all best practices at once, take into account the fact how costly they may be and how realistic it will be implement everything at once. The CEO pushes you to deliver some noticeable results of your program in 2-3 months from now and your budget should not exceed $50,000 for this program [The CEO, though, is willing to expand the budget to support the program if it shows a positive trend in 2-3 months).

Think of a program for the organization and outline it on 1-2 pages (double-spaced). Only 1 program per group is needed. All group members work on the document and only 1 document from each group SHOULD BE EMAILED to me (notposted on Blackboard) by the due time. You can you Blackboard for your own discussions if needed (your discussions for the exercise will not be graded). External references will help you shape your ideas but you do not need to provide any external references/citation for this exercise.

In your cultural diversity program design please address the following:

1.Goal of your program

2.Message to employees (how you would persuade them that it is in fact needed)

3.2-3 possible formal activities and who will be responsible (Eg. a counselor that will be helping with conflict resolution due to cultural differences)

4.2-3 possible informal activities and who will be responsible (Eg. international coffee hours organized by departments in a rotation manner)

5.IMPORTANT: Briefly discuss how you would assure employee involvement and participation in your program, i.e. how you will increase their interest in the program.
