It has influenced all spheres of life, ranging from social, economic to political, and legal sectors. Technologically emerging countries have weak economies. Project actualization times are cut by half due to the application of technology. Technology has impacted many fields such as in medicine, education, communication, genetics, environment, among other areas. It has, for instance, helped in the development of drugs and treatments of diseases such as cancer. It has also helped in curbing of crimes. A lot of people do not realize the negative impact, and its advancement has led to she changes in people’s lifestyle. Technology has changed the mode of interaction in families. It as also led resulted in ethical issues such as in the medical field. This paper explores the positive impact of internet technology.
The internet is a system of computers which are interconnected and communicating through protocols such as TCP or IP via various media types. It has immensely impacted society in positive ways. First, education and research have been made easier. The creation of websites and databases has enabled access to information online to be possible. For instance, the google search engine is fed with algorithms that allow one to search for knowledge and get it within seconds or microseconds. The results are arranged in the order of their relevance. Sorting of the information in the order of significance makes research easier. Indeed, research has been facilitated by the availability of information online in the form of journals, online college libraries, online magazines, and E-books. E-books are just the PDF versions of the hardcopy ones. Before the advent of the internet, the research involved going to the libraries and spending hours getting information that is specific to the topic of study. Examples of online journals and websites include Science Direct Journal, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, among many others. On the same note, the internet has led to the emergence of online discussion forums such as Flip grid and Nearpod. The forums provide an avenue for teacher and students interactions. Students who participate actively by writing new topics and commenting on the pots of other students and teachers benefit highly from the forums (Alzahrani 165).
Thirdly, the internet has revolutionized the communication industry. The Internet plays a significant role in the communication industry. It facilitates the sending and receiving of electronic messages. Social media applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram enables people to communicate from any corner of the globe. People can send emails by use of, for instance, Gmail. Social media sites connect an astonishingly large number of people. For example, Facebook, the most popular social media website, has 1.13 billion users (Michael & Gwendolyn 17). Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram have provided avenues for starting romantic relationships. When young individuals spot a person they are interested in, they attempt to find that person on Facebook and get some information from the partner’s profile. Sending of a friend request follows, which leads to requesting of a phone number and they end up dating. Gone are the days when people used only to meet physically and plan for dates. The internet provides an alternative method of communication, which is faster and easier. Users from different parts of the world network and interact over the internet, which has led to the exchange of cultures among different types of people.
Moreover, the internet has led to the advent of online shopping. Online shopping has replaced the wall and bricks shops where one could have shopped. Also, online shopping is more relaxed and convenient as a customer can order products at the comfort of their homes. It saves time as one avoids the long lines available in supermarket payment counters (Modaldo 1). Online shops offer payments facilities such as PayPal and use of credit cards. On a similar note, online causes a reduction in the prices of the goods as maintenance and real estate costs are eliminated. The decrease in the costs of goods is transferred to the customers in the form of discounts. The success of online shopping companies such as Walmart, E-Bay, Amazon, among other companies reveals the powerful force of the internet in transforming brick and mortar shopping method to brick and click. Online shopping provides a wide variety of goods from different manufacturers. Searching through these goods happen quickly by the use of a search button on the shopping website.
Additionally, internet trends have shaped recruitment and working methods. Companies currently are opting for online recruitment since it has several advantages. For example, it is flexible since the posts made in recruitment sites such as LinkedIn can be amended as opposed to posts in newspapers. It also helps the organization hire the best qualified or suited applicants as it improves the screening stage of the hiring process (Nafia & Nahida 83). Online recruitment is also advantageous to the employer since it reduces the workload of the hiring process. Likewise, the internet has enabled online working. An example is PewDiePie and Vsauce, who have used the internet to become rich and stars (Jason 4). Working online can also entail doing online writing, such as being a blogs content creator, data entry, among others. It saves costs and time that could have been consumed by commuting. Online working also boosts family relationships as on can always work from home provided, they have a laptop and internet connection.
Further, the internet has shaped the advertisement industry. It has led to the shift in the mode of advertisements. Many companies are opting for online advertisements which take advantage of the large number of people using the internet. We have seen the growth of spending in online advertisement budgets. Its growth has seen it surpass the traditional method of advertisement, the television. In the year 2017, the annual expenditure on online advertising reached $ 209 billion, which translated into 41% of all money spend on advertising. The television model was second with a share of 35% (Kafka & Molla 1). Online advertising is becoming the preference of many companies because the internet can provide a specifically targeted audience. A lot of internet users’ data is collected and analyzed by the use of algorithms. An example is those of google AdSense to map the advertisement with the correct audience. Due to the high competition in online ads, the cost of running adverts over the internet is cheaper than in the televisions. It hence saves the clients of the advertising companies costs.
Also, the internet provides entertainment to the users. Video sharing sites such as YouTube have entertaining videos such as pranks and comical videos. The videos act as excellent tools for relieving stress and depression. There are many websites where one can watch movies for free or at a little charge. The internet has online games such as Yahoo Games, Shockwave, among others which one can play and get entertained. the games can be played even without downloading and installing them. Social media sites also provide fun to users. They are equipped with features video calling, commenting on posts, chatting in group settings, among others. By the use of the internet, one can listen to music, listen to live FM radio and watch television. Music can be streamed from music libraries such as Spotify. It is also entertaining streaming live events via Facebook and YouTube. Use of Instagram and Facebook enables people to follow the lives of favorite entertainment celebrities and public figures hence getting entrained from their day to day doings in the form of posts.
Lastly, the internet has changed the banking sector positively. For example, it has reduced the time taken to queue to be served by tellers by the adoption of online banking. Customers can now access banking services even at the comfort of their home. Reduction of the time has resulted in an improvement in customer experience. Banks now have a global reach before the internet. Banks can access and share information from the cloud hence improving the banking sector by empowerment through better ways of doing business. The security of data has also been enhanced. Today, data is stored using very sophisticated technologies which are difficult to access. Banks do not depend anymore on the use of physical manuscripts which were erroneous and at the risk of getting lost or tampered with.
Some parties suggest that the internet isolates people (Hosie 1). That is based on the sense that most people end up feeling lonelier after spending more than two hours online. However, in actuality, social has primarily connected people across the globe. Social media has made the world a small global village. People can send electronic messages, emails, pictures, and even teleconference. For the people who are immigrants in foreign countries, social media websites make them feel close to the family members back in the home country. Communication with family members reduces or eliminates homesickness. Immigrants students can use the internet to contact close to the family members hence recording better results. It has brought people together by the use of the features of social media websites such as “group” feature. Social media enables people to meet strangers and network. Studies have shown that people tend to reveal their problems to strangers, making people less depressed. Social media allows people to talk openly hence reducing depression.
Based on Boerman et al. (2), there are a good number of people who spend a lot of their time online, leaving a lot of data at the end. The information left behind makes users lose privacy. However, loss of privacy is mostly deliberate as one gives out their information. Everyone is the first guardian of the safety of their data. Laws have been enacted to protect the collection and use of data. Moreover, one should never give out their data if they don’t know how it will be used. The internet should not be at fault if one gives out their information deliberately, or tricked to do the same.
In conclusion, technology, specifically, the internet, has and will continue to have a positive impact on society. Since the advent of the internet, life has been made easier. It has highly revolutionized the way people communicate and interact. Social media has also revamped the entertainment industry, education and research, communication, and social interactions. It has also shaped the advertisement industry by coming up with an audience targeted adverts. However, internet users should be keen not to lose their privacy by giving up their private information. Indeed, the internet is not a virulent form of technology if used properly.
