Manual Design & Effectiveness

Refer to Chapter 7 & pages 419-20.  Locate a print or online owner’s manual (longer than 10 pages) for a consumer product, such as a coffee maker, bicycle, or hair dryer. In a memo (example page 254) to your instructor, discuss three decisions the writers and designers of the manual appear to have made to address.

FORMAT:  Compose in form of a report with clear headings and sub-headings.  Remember to put this in a memo document which is single spaced with a space between paragraphs.  There is no salutation (Dear…), nor closing (Sincerely,).

Attribute the Owners Manual in APA or MLA reference style at the end of your report.

1.  Audience-related factors:  for whom is the manual written and what reading level, etc.

2.  Purpose-related factors, or document design factors:  highlight design elements such as table of contents, graphics, charts, font, spacing, layout, etc.  Also specifically address the use of Proximity, Alignment, Repetition, Contrast, Layout, Typography (Type size & font style), Images, Writing.  Other aspects to consider:  Is there an Index and is it comprehensive?  A table of Contents?

3.  Elaborate on what is effective, ineffective, and how might you improve the manual.
