Today I will be sharing some insights regarding cyber counseling. After reviewing the ethical guidelines the in text, I will conduct further research and share my findings about cyber counseling. I will also discuss if I see cyber counseling an asset to counselors as well as list some perceived benefits. I will conclude with any concerns I might have about cyber counseling.
According to Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey (2012), cyber counseling can be defined as “the provision of counseling support to a client by a qualified professional via the internet” (p. 242). In essence, using some type of computer or cell phone device, a counselor connects with a client to chat one on one. According to Harris & Birnbaum (2015), cyber counseling has experienced explosive growth due to the ability to reach individuals who had reservations about seeing a counselor due to stigma, linguistic barriers or inconvenience. In turn, cyber counseling has become a key asset to counselors in regard to reaching individuals who need help and advice that were previously inaccessible. Harris & Birnbaum (2015) go on to state that cyber counseling tends to reduce the clients inhibitions about seeing a counselor, and those clients tend to be more open to expression than if they were in the physical presence of a counselor. If the client choses to do so, asynchronous communication may be used where the client and counselor provides videos of themselves to be viewed at one’s convenience (Mallen, et al., 2011). This space between communications may allow deeper thought and reflection prior to responding to the client or counselor (Folsom, 2010).
While there are many advantages to cyber counseling, there are some potential drawbacks. Mallen, et al. (2011) report that there is the risk of non-verbal cues being missed by the counselor, as well as technological challenges that technology can be susceptible. I live in rural Iowa, and my internet accessibility is spotty at times. I agree that technology can act as a barrier on occasion.
In considering concerns about cyber counseling, in my limited review of the literature around this subject, it appeared that a recurring theme was around how little we know about the effectiveness of cyber counseling. This is further compounded with the ethical questions that remain regarding cyber counseling. Harris & Birnbaum (2015) point out that serious questions remain in regard to licensure, liability and informed consent.
