This morning I will be sharing some insights regarding the O*Net Online occupational search engine. As part of this discussion post, I will search for three different occupations and address questions around the types of information I found, how I would use this information as a career counselor, and any potential downsides. The three occupations I have selected are:
Technical Writer
Market Research Analyst
Professor.
The first career that was researched was Technical Writer – it was my first real career, and a career that lasted about 15 years. It was a career I very much enjoyed, but having achieved all I wanted to achieve in the career, I decided to explore other opportunities. According to O*Net, technical writers must have a diverse skill set that includes language proficiency, computer literacy, and critical thinking. In thinking back to my pre-Technical Writing days, those skills very much aligned with the skills I exercised in high school. In scanning through the qualifications, education, working environment, etc., I found the description to be highly accurate based on those positions I held in the field.
After I left Technical Writing, I assumed a position of Market Research Analyst. My primary job was to collect customer survey data and slice it and dice it to make meaning of it. Like the description of Technical Writing, this position too valued language proficiency, computer skills, and analytical skills. In both positons, it was critical to be able to collect and organize data. I can see a common thread between the two jobs which made for an almost seamless transition from one role to the other.
My current and last positon is that of Professor. O*Net does not have a category or description for Professor, so I had to find something that is similar to my role. The closest that I could come was Business Teacher, Post-Secondary. In reviewing this position, it is quite different than my previous two occupations, especially in the area of knowledge and skills. Although language proficiency is important in all three occupations, the Business Teacher, Post-Secondary role is geared more toward personal relations. In other words, I gave up the data and substituted it with personal interaction.
Being a career counselor, I would find the information contained within the O*Net website to be quite helpful. I did see a lot of personality attributes that align to particular careers which I am convinced is important to know before embarking in a career direction. As Lapolice, Carter, & Johnson (2008) explain, O*Net descriptor data is highly accurate, and can provide direct support for those looking at potential occupations.
As far as potential downsides to the O*Net website, I found it to be extremely fact based, but do wonder to what extent Emotional Intelligence (EI) plays in engaging is a successful career. I do think going forward, EI will be considered more in career selection as some careers do require a high degree of EI, and others, quite like my two previous careers, did not require a high degree of EI at all.
