Take the same article you read last week: “Is Forgiving Student Loan Debt a Good Idea?” by Kayla Webley on page 129 of your Current Issues and Enduring Questions textbook, and analyze the article for the three following things:
Ethos: What gives the article credibility? Why do you trust the author?
Pathos: What feeling is evoked when reading this article? (A feeling can be evoked from one part of the text or the whole thing.) Identify and describe a specific emotion (happy, fear, concern, hope, anger, etc.) that the text evokes. How does it evoke this emotion?
Logos: What strategies are used to get the reader interested in the topic? What strategies are used get the reader to accept the claim?
Ex. Webley describes how she gets constant requests on Facebook to sign petitions for student loan debt forgiveness programs in the first paragraph. Why does she begin her article this way? Perhaps she is trying to connect with a reader who has also seen these petitions on Facebook or other media outlets. People that would get these petitions are typically college graduates (indicated in their information page on Facebook or through their search and “like” history of college events and news) and would automatically understand the issues with loan payback procedures. She is trying to draw in a reader-base that also has student loans and have previously participated in signing petitions or might be interested in doing so in the future. This information about student loan petitions in her first paragraph also lets the reader know that the issue of student loans is serious and worth discussing, which leads to a real-life petition introduced in paragraph two.
