1 Objectives (linked to RICS Professional Competencies)
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of why and how sustainability seeks to balance economic, environmental and social objectives at global, national and local levels, in the context of land, property and the built environment.
• Critically appraise the breadth of professional and academic literature applicable to your professional development.
• Provide evidence of practical application in your area of practice and understand the relevance of information gathered and the uses to which it can be applied. Analyse the information and data collected.
• Illustrate a practical application in your professional pathway, being able to justify actions at all times and demonstrate personal commitment to the rules of conduct, ethics and RICS 5 professional and ethical standards.
• Demonstrate business and customer awareness basic understanding of the key drivers for business success including the importance of innovation and taking calculated risks and the need to provide customer satisfaction and build customer loyalty.
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices underlying sound economic development policies in the context of international, national, regional and local economic issues. This should include inward investment strategies and urban regeneration strategies.
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role and significance of RICS and its functions. Also, an appreciation of your personal professional role and societys expectations of professional practice and RICS code of conduct and conduct regulations, including the general principles of law and the legal system, as applicable in your country of practice.
• Apply your knowledge of sustainable management of the built environment as part of the urban planning and regeneration process. Demonstrate an understanding of the roles played by public, private and not-for-profit sectors.
• Integrate the practical application of oral, written, graphic and presentation skills which are appropriate in a variety of situations, specifically including where negotiation is involved.

3. Coursework Submission and Deadline
CW1 (4,000 words) Professional Development Assessment
The Coursework value is 100% of the overall unit grade.
This is an individual CW that must be completed by each student.
The submission deadline is 1530 hours on Thursday 20 March 2014
• A CD and a hard copy (which must be spiral bound and can be larger than A4) must be submitted to the Administration Office.
• An electronic copy must also be submitted through Moodle by the same deadline.
• It must include the Assignment Marksheet with the plagiarism box ticked and state the word length.
The learning outcomes of this unit are assessed through the production of a Professional Development Assessment that will embody an awareness of sustainable property development.
Based on Lectures, Workshops and Off-site activities, and self-directed independent study, the Professional Development Assessment will connect you explicitly to professional standards, ethics and training. It will embody sustainable property development, embrace social, economic and environmental objectives, assess ethical considerations, appraise current issues and self-assess CPD. It will create a multi-layered Professional Development Assessment which will contribute significantly to your employability and CPD.
A. Introduction (10%) (400 words)
1. Define sustainability within Property Development.
2. Introduce sustainable property development themes contained within European Directives, government legislation and policies and local plans.
3. Relate these sustainable themes to planning objectives, market feasibility and profitability in the context of the Portsea/Portsmouth/S.E. Hampshire region.

B. Critical Evaluation of all Guest Lectures, leading to an Appraisal of Sustainability Issues in Literature (55%) (2,200 words)
1. What did you learn that was relevant to the theme of sustainability?
2. Where did the lectures lead you in independent reading to develop this theme of sustainability?
(The number of lectures reviewed will be reflected in the marking)

C. Assessment of Ethical Considerations relating to Sustainability (15%) (600 words)
An assessment should be made of such concepts as morality, social cohesion, authenticity, distinctiveness, placemaking, social capital, community sustainability, social housing, social engineering, social mobility, gentrification and social barriers arising from these parameters. (Ratcliffe, 2011; RICS, July 2011; RICS, July 2012; RICS, Sept 2012)
It should reference RICS ethical standards and University of Portsmouth Faculty of Technology Guidelines constraining interview data, which should be cited according to the relevant Consent Form. You should also address Copyright and Intellectual Property issues.

1. Provide evidence through the Portsea Heritage Project and your own reading, of the professional skills you have acquired through this independent, self-managed study.
