11907Overview
The final project for this course is the creation of a public health issue presentation.

Public health practice focuses on how to prevent health problems in a population, but within that practice there are many complex factors at play. Public health practitioners may have specific expertise in one or several subdisciplines such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and management, and/or emergency preparedness. The settings where public health practitioners work also fall into a wide range and tend to dictate the expertise needed; for example, a local health department may have one or two staff perform all local public health functions in a community, whereas a larger entity at the state or national level might need practitioners to be organized by subdiscipline or condition. Regardless of which particular field you pursue and what skill set you ultimately acquire, you will need to understand what constitutes a public health issue, who is involved in addressing it, and the practical and ethical factors that figure into its resolution.

This final project provides you with the opportunity to explore public health goals and a public health response to a health problem. You will explore a recent public health issue identified as a priority public health topic by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) or Healthy People 2020 (or most current HP edition). You will explore the distribution of the health problem in the population, the public health response to the problem, the public health organization and practitioners involved in addressing the problem, and current directions to address the problem. This will require the review and summary of appropriate scientific resources related to the public health problem.

The project is divided into four milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules One, Three, Four, and Five. The final product will be submitted in Module Seven.

This assessment addresses the following course outcomes:

Illustrate the roles of organizations and services within the U.S. public health system in addressing public health issues
Apply public health theoretical frameworks and strategies to current problems in promoting positive health outcomes for people in communities
Draw connections between public health responses and professional ethics in explaining how social determinants and healthcare disparities are addressed
Investigate epidemiological information and public health strategies for explaining the effectiveness of public health responses
Prompt
Develop a presentation (using PowerPoint) that describes a public health issue and national goals set for that problem on Healthy People 2020. The presentation will give an overview of the distribution of the problem in the United States, factors associated with the problem, social determinants of the problem, and any health disparities. Your presentation must contain speaker notes that fully address the contents below. Support for your speaker notes will come from scholarly resources.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

Background: Provide a clear background of your selected priority public health issue. Be sure you address the issue’s goal statements and relevant context for the issue in terms of the ecological model, citing scholarly support.
Who, What, Where, Why, and When
Analyze the patterns, causes, and effects of the health issue in the population. For example, how is the issue distributed in the population?
Describe the social determinants associated with the issue. How do these determinants impact the health of those affected by the issue?
Describe known disparities (i.e., socioeconomic, demographic, cultural, and geographic) associated with the health outcomes of your specific population with regard to the public health issue.
Public Health Interventions: In this section, you will examine public health interventions published in the scholarly literature for how they addressed your selected public health issue.
Analyze two published public health interventions used to address the issue, including the theoretical basis of each intervention. In other words, what were the strategies used to address this problem and what was the rationale for those actions, according to the scholarly resources?
Explain how the selected interventions reflect primary, secondary, and/or tertiary intervention strategies for public health prevention.
Explain how the interventions address social determinants of health and the disparities in healthcare associated with the issue.
Public Health Response: In this section, you will inspect the public health landscape to identify who is involved in responding to your public health issue and what actions they are taking.
Describe the public health organizations involved in the response to the public health issue at the national and local levels. Use examples that show which entities are working on the issue and what they are doing. For example, what federal and local agencies and/or not-for-profit entities are involved, and what are their roles in the response?
Explain the specific public health subdisciplines involved in understanding and responding to the issue, including what their roles are. Examples of public health subdisciplines include biostatistics, epidemiology, maternal and child health, and disaster-response planning.
Explain the public health services involved in the response to the issue. What types of services, programs, or campaigns have been offered by organizations in response to the problem? Be sure to provide examples.
Current Directions: Based on your understanding of the health goals and interventions, identify gaps in the response and draw connections to the broader field of public health.
Explain the overall effectiveness of the public health response to your issue, based on any gaps between its goals and the current information and strategies. In other words, given what you understood about the distribution of the public health issue and the strategies that have been undertaken to address it, what are the obstacles to this public health response meeting its goals?
Discuss the unique perspective that public health theoretical frameworks provide in addressing this issue. In other words, how is the public health approach different from the way other medical models might address this issue, and what advantages do public health frameworks have in terms of promoting positive health outcomes with regard to the issue?
Reflect on the connections between the public health response to this issue and broader ethical questions of social justice, poverty, and systematic disadvantage. Specifically, how does the response help to improve conditions for people in their communities? Keep in mind ethical theories and principles studied in this course.
Milestones
Milestone One: Background
In Module One, you will submit your topic selection and identify background information such as the significance of the public health issue and the issue’s goal statements. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone One Rubric.

Milestone Two: Who, What, Where, Why, and When
In Module Three, you will submit an epidemiological analysis of your chosen public health issue, including patterns, determinants, and disparities. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Two Rubric.

Milestone Three: Public Health Interventions
In Module Four, you will submit an analysis of existing public health interventions for your chosen issue. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Three Rubric.

Milestone Four: Public Health Response (Who and How?)
In Module Five, you will submit identify and describe the public health organizations responsible for coordinating the response to your chosen issue. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Four Rubric.

Final Submission: Public Health Issue Presentation
In Module Seven, you will submit your final project. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission will be graded with the Final Project Rubric.

What to Submit
Use the Final Project Template to complete your public health presentation. Comprehensively address the public health issue using speaker notes and scholarly resources for support. Support for your speaker notes will come from scholarly resources, including the following: at least two scholarly resources for the background of the public health issue, at least two scholarly resources for response to the problem, and at least two scholarly resources for current directions to address the problem.

Submit the file as a PDF document showing your speaker notes. Review the Presentation Guidelines document, available in the learning environment, for instructions on how to write the speaker notes and save your presentation as a PDF.
