For this activity read the case study carefully and answer the questions listed below. Your responses should be thoughtful and thorough and at least one page (300 words) long. Please proofread for spelling and grammar. Points will be deducted for poorly written papers.
Case Study
Mr. and Mrs. Saoud are parents to three children, Reza, Raffi, and Samia, ages four, seven, and thirteen respectively. There are criminal physical abuse allegations against Mr. Saoud and Mrs. Saoud has been charged with failure to protect her children. The children are separated and placed in foster care because there is no family in the area that is available to take care of the children. The parents do not believe that they have done anything wrong and their defense is that they were “disciplining the children” for not doing chores and homework. Mrs. Saoud has shown up to supervised visits with bruises and one time with her arm in a sling. When asked by the case worker about her injuries she states that she is “clumsy and walked into the door.” The parents are not keeping their appointments with their case worker and have not followed the recommendations of their case plan in order to reunify the family. When asked why they are not “working the case plan” both parents just shrug their shoulders. There has been talk about terminating the parental rights.
- Do you believe that terminating the parental rights is in the best interest of the children? Explain your response.
- English may not be the Saoud’s first language and they may not be aware of what is actually taking place. Whose responsibility is it to ask about the possibility of a language barrier? Why is this person responsible?
- Mr. and Mrs. Saoud discipline their children the way they were disciplined by their parents, not seeing anything wrong with a “firm spanking.” As a case manager how do you approach the topic of culture and discipline?
- When Reza, Raffi and Samia become parents, do you think they are at risk of abusing their children? Why or why not?
