STAT200 Introduction to Statistics Project 7
As we go into the last week of the course and prepare for the final exam, this is a good opportunity to reflect on how you may use statistics in the future either in your personal life or at work. For me I do statistics for fun keeping track of my golf game, analyzing my favorite sports teams, and tracking my weight among other things. This week’s project will have two parts. Part one will be to look at how use might use descriptive statistics and the other how you might use inferential statistics. Delete my examples and replace them with your own.
Part 1: (10 Points) How might use descriptive statistics in your life? Describe the data you would collect, what your sample would be, what your variable(s) would be, what graphs you might make, and what your statistic would be (if applicable).
My example: I would collect data on my golf scores at river bend golf club. My sample would be all my 2019 rounds of golf. The variable would be the scores. I would make a scatter plot with the round number on the x axis and the score on the y axis. I would also calculate the mean, median, and standard deviation of the scores.
Part 2: (25 points) How might you use descriptive statistics in your life? What question will you try to answer? Describe the data you would collect, the sample, the random variable(s), the parameter, the analysis you would use. Describe the steps of the analysis and appropriate hypothesis, test level and/or confidence interval.
My example: Are my golf scores at River Bend Golf Course different from my golf scores at the Links at Osan golf course? I would collect all my scores from both golf courses. The samples are the rounds of golf at each course. I would use two sample independent t-test because I don’t have the same number of rounds at each course. If I took a random sample of 10 rounds from each course I could do a paired t-test since I would be the same individual. The random variable would be the scores at each course and the parameter would be the mean scores at each course.
Step 1. State the random variables and the parameters in words.
X1= Golf scores at River Bend GC
X2= Golf scores at the Links at Osan GC
Step 2. State the null and alternative hypotheses and the level of significance
Step 3. State and check the assumptions
a. I used all the samples instead of a random sample.
b. They are independent since one score is not related to the other and don’t have to be paired.
c. I could do a histogram, quartiles, and normal probability plot to test if the scores are normally distributed.
d. I would test the variances to see if they are equal.
Step 4. Find the sample statistic, test statistic, and p-value
I would find the standard deviations:

Step 5. Conclusion: I would either reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis that the score were the same.
Step 6. Interpretation: I would state whether there was enough evidence to say that my scores at River Bend GC were Different from my scores at the Links at Osan GC.
