Students will conduct research on a single health topic, locating at least one scientific article and one non-scientific article about the topic. The student will explore the differences and share findings through an essay paper. The purpose of this assignment is to explore the differences in scientific and non-scientific articles related to health. The focus of this assignment is limited to three content areas: nutrition, disease prevention and sexual health. Students will select a single topic that falls within one of the three content areas. The content areas are broad and many topics will be appropriate. You may wish to conduct some research on multiple potential topics before selecting your final topic. Once you have selected your topic you will locate a scientific and nonscientific article both on the same topic. Divide the paper into the following sections. 1) Introduction (2 to 3 paragraphs) This section should introduce your topic and provide a brief summary of the two articles. 2) Themes (1 to 3 paragraphs) In this section discuss any overarching themes that occur in both articles. This section should focus on a specific part of each article not the entire article. These are broad ideas or concepts not the specific details you will cover in the next section. 3) Topic 1 (1 to 3 paragraphs) Select a common element in the articles and compare and contrast this element. Provide details and comprehension about the two sources. This should be a well-organized discussion not just a statement of what each article says. 4) Topic 2 (1 to 3 paragraphs) Select a common element in the articles and compare and contrast this element. This section should focus on a specific part of each article not the entire article. Provide details and comprehension about the two sources. This should be a well-organized discussion not just a statement of what each article says. 5) Topic 3 (1 to 3 paragraphs) The third topic is optional. This is also where you can state your opinions. Discuss any advantages or disadvantages you were able to identify between using a scientific and a non-scientific source. End your paper with a purposeful conclusion. Font: Calibri, Arial or Veranda (11 point) References: They are required. You must cite each article within the paper and on a works cited page.
