13 Jun STUDY THE CODE TO ANALYZE HOW EFFECTIVELY IT STATES THE IDEALS OF THE ORGANIZATION
This is a link to the discussion forum where you will post your own response to the questions below and review another student’s comments.
Now that we have investigated and practiced several aspects of effective technical communication, let’s consider a practical application of these principles that many professions develop, that being a ‘code of ethics’ document.
Visit the following website, find your career track or something close, then review the ‘Code of Ethics’ you find there. You might want to revisit Chapter 2 of our text about Ethical and Legal Considerations before doing this assignment:
http://ethics.iit.edu/index1.php/Programs/Codes%20of%20Ethics/Index%20Of%20Codes
For those in the nursing field:
American Nurses Association code of ethics
Once you have done this, respond to the following questions:
1. Tell your class mates what discipline you researched.
2. Why do you think these ethical behaviors have been identified as important to your career field? Offer at least one example to discuss.
3. Study the code to analyze how effectively it states the ideals of the organization, describes proper and improper behavior and practices for employees, and spells out penalties. Does what you find seem reasonable? Explain your response.
4. Identify at least one ethical behavior in this list that you know people have difficulty with and offer your reasons as to why this is true. You might consider a situation you are familiar with (no names, please) and/or general life experience.
5. Do you think that most people already practice these behaviors or are they ones that need to be coached? Explain your rationale. As with all discussion forums, keep in mind the business language criteria for forum participation when you post to the forums and the following:
◦ Respond to the original question in an original thread with a post of at least 250 words.
◦ You must also respond to at least 1 other student posting by replying to his/her thread. This response must be a minimum of 150 words, which continues the conversation. No “Good response” only responses.
This is my classmate posting,
1.Tell your class mates what discipline you researched.
For this assignment, I am looking at AHIMA’s Code of Ethics. AHIMA is the American Health Information Management Association, and I am actually already a member of this organization as a student in their accredited Health Information Technology program here at Ivy Tech. The Code of Ethics can be found at
http://library.ahima.org/xpedio/groups/public/documents/ahima/bok1_024277.hcsp?dDocName=bok1_024277
2. Why do you think these ethical behaviors have been identified as important to your career field? Offer at least one example to discuss.
Health Information Management is probably one of the best examples of a professional field in which it is very important to maintain ethical behavior. As a component of the health care system—specifically, the component dealing with all the confidential patient information—it makes sense that professionals in this field need to follow specific guidelines about handling personal health information, releasing that information to third parties, capturing and recording data accurately, etc.
3. Study the code to analyze how effectively it states the ideals of the organization, describes proper and improper behavior and practices for employees, and spells out penalties. Does what you find seem reasonable? Explain your response.
I find the AHIMA Code of Ethics to be very practical and very thorough. Complete with a preamble, it explains each thing to do or not do as a Health Information Management professional, along with the importance of following these guidelines. It is broken into 11 sections of ethical principles, making it easier to read and understand specific areas of concern. The section about how to use the code is also helpful in putting the Code to use in real-life situations.
4. Identify at least one ethical behavior in this list that you know people have difficulty with and offer your reasons as to why this is true. You might consider a situation you are familiar with (no names, please) and/or general life experience.
“1.4. Protect the confidentiality of all information obtained in the course of professional service. Disclose only information that is directly relevant or necessary to achieve the purpose of disclosure. Release information only with valid authorization from a patient or a person legally authorized to consent on behalf of a patient or as authorized by federal or state regulations. The minimum necessary standard is essential when releasing health information for disclosure activities.”
I think this is one area that seems fairly straightforward but can actually be a tricky thing to practice. Everyone knows not to breach security in big ways, but small breaches happen all the time. For instance, two HIM professionals might talk about certain patient information a little more than they need to (maybe the patient has a very rare disease or is a celebrity). Even though they are not releasing the information to outside sources, there is no real necessity for their talking, so it is unethical. As for the minimum necessary standard, I think that is also breached sometimes. If, say, an insurance company asks for a part of a patient’s health record, the HIM professional should release only what is needed and asked for, not the entire record.
5. Do you think that most people already practice these behaviors or are they ones that need to be coached? Explain your rationale.
I think most of the behaviors outlined in AHIMA’s Code of Ethics are practiced because they are common sense, but I do think some of the finer details warrant a closer look sometimes. Like I said above, there can be grey areas sometimes when it comes to privacy and confidentiality. HIM professionals need to always monitor their actions because sometimes even well-intentioned or “innocent” acts can breach patient confidentiality. You never realize all the legalities and special rules involved in medical records and data until you study Health Information Management!
