DESCRIPTION:
Subject: applying non-nursing theory to advance nursing practice. Assignment is to respond to discussion 1 in 140 words and respond to discussion 2 in 135 words using one scholarly article within the 5years. DISCUSSION ONE Skinner’s Theory Applied to Nursing B. F. Skinner was one of the most influential theorists/psychologists. He was a behaviorist, which means he thought it was “more productive to study observable behavior rather than internal mental events” (McLeod, 2007). His studies and theory can be applied to the nurse educator.

Skinner was the author of the theory “Operant Conditioning.” Simply put, it means that positively reinforced behavior will be repeated and negatively reinforced behavior will die out (or strengthened and weakened). He developed his theory using rats and positively or negatively reinforcing their behavior. As a nurse educator, it would be beneficial to use operant conditioning with nursing students. The most obvious way that the nurse educator could positively reinforce behavior is by words of praise. For example, if you are teaching a clinical session and a student correctly does a full nursing assessment, the educator could praise him/her for remembering all of the components of the assessment and performing them correctly.

This could also be applied to class participation by the nurse educator complimenting participation or thanking the students for participation. Recognition for positive behavior will encourage more of that behavior according to Skinner’s theory. It will be harder for the nurse educator to provide negative reinforcement. Thinking back to my nursing education, we had a test where the entire class did very poorly. As a “punishment,” the instructor created another test with more material that was covered on it. This negative reinforcement caused all of the students to study harder for the new test. In conclusion, encouraging desired behaviors in nursing students can be beneficial to their learning experience. “According to this psychology, it was stated that the human mind is composed of various forces such as argument, attention, judgment, memory, and similar items. It was believed that these forces could be strengthened by practicing.

This theory is applied in the nursing. Students in a clinical setting encounter a number of different points, which need different combined forces” (Aliakbari, Parvi, Heidari, & Haghani, 2015). Discouraging undesired behaviors will also help nursing students to be better in their own nursing practice upon graduation. Skinner’s Operant Conditioning theory will help nursing educators be more effective teachers by using positive and negative reinforcements. DISCUSSION 2 Nursing theory is useful in guiding nursing practice but there are times when nurses may use theories from other areas that are non-nursing related. One commonly used theory that is not a nursing theory is Maslow’s theory of human motivation. Maslow’s theory is from the psychology profession but can be used in nursing practice. This theory states that all humans have needs that must be complete in an order from most basic needs to the more advanced needs and without completion of basic needs, advanced needs cannot be met (Mannella & Holle, 2017). Maslow’s hierarch of needs is often shown as a pyramid with the basic needs at the bottom and more advanced needs at the top but one can only reach the top after they have met the needs at the bottom (Mannella & Holle, 2017).

The pyramid of needs contains five levels, physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness and love needs, esteem and psychological needs, and self-actualization needs (Mannella & Holle, 2017). Nurses can use Maslow’s theory even though it is not a nursing theory because it allows nurses to visualize what needs they need to help their patients achieve before they can fulfill other needs. When working in direct patient care, Maslow’s theory can be applied into practice. Maslow’s theory is often used in conjunction with Orem’s self-care deficit theory. By using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the nurse can identify what needs are not being met and can then in turn use Orem’s theory to apply nursing interventions to meet those needs so the patient can work on meeting their advanced needs.

If a patient is struggling with self-esteem and feels little personal worth, the nurse can use the pyramid to evaluate how to meet the psychological needs portion of the pyramid. The nurse would look at the lower sections of the pyramid such as physiological to evaluate if the patient is meeting basic needs like food, water, and sleep. If these needs are being met, the nurse would move to the next level and so on until the patient’s needs were being met. Maslow’s theory provides a framework to show nurses what needs have to be met for the patient to improve their health status and wellness. Brittani McConkey Reference Mennella, H. A., & Holle, M. O.
