My specialty area is Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and I plan on working in a doctor’s office or an outpatient facility. The first step of influencing change is to identify a problem or an area that needs improvement. The second step involves developing a strategy to improve the problem using an evidence-based approach. The third step is to sell the strategy to management and staff, getting them to buy in on the need and benefits of the proposed change. The final step is to implement the strategy making improvements and adjustments along the way.
According to Hockaday (2015), successful leadership requires diligence, social skills, emotional intelligence, attention to detail and team building. Emotional intelligence comprises self-awareness, empathy, motivation and self-regulation. Team building involves respect, relationships, and mentoring. Two strengths that I can use to promote strong leadership are diligence and attention to detail. I believe these strengths are essential to the implementation of change. Doing something different is hard and can best be accomplished through hard work.
There are two areas of improvement that I need to possess to become a better leader and influence change. These are experience and confidence. As an FNP, I will be thrust into a more challenging role than I have experienced thus far as a bedside nurse. I have almost four years of experience as a nurse and have learned a great deal about leadership and how to affect change. However, I have never been tasked with being a leader or making change on a day-to-day basis. As an FNP, leadership and change will become an integral part of my everyday practice.
A priority strategy I plan to implement as a professional development tool for leadership is to use my social skills to get to know the members of my staff to quickly develop rapport and begin team building. A second priority strategy I intend to use is to apply my attention to detail and diligence abilities to assess current policies and procedures to identify issues that could be improved. In order for me to be an effective agent of change, I must gain the confidence of my staff and focus my initial efforts on those issues that are significant.
