Test 2 Review Guide

Has to be taken at Testing Center

· Have your Student ID

· NO resources allowed

· Time is not limited

How to prepare for Test:

 Read your guides first and highlight all the terms and core part of your answers.

When reading – omit my comments and additional information (even better – delete them, if not done earlier). Focus on YOUR answers.

· Fill in the charts (below) with pencil. Do as much as possible from memory.

When finished, check your answers against Guides or Book. Correct the wrong answers

and fill in the missed ones. You can erase the answers and repeat it.

 Make sure you remember what you have put in the charts – this is a required minimum to succeed on test.

Finally – please do not do automatic memorizing.

This last phase – Reviewing – is an important part of the learning process.

While you compile the charts – thinking and trying to put together the puzzle pieces – you sum up all the facts into a big picture.

Think – analyze – sum up!

CLASSICAL WORLD TIMELINE

Place on the timeline Greece, Etruscans, Roman Republic and Roman Empire (Early and Late)

——————————————————————————————————–

900 800 700 600 500 400 300 200 100 O 100 200 300 400 50

Always give enough time to work with the timelines. Make sure you understand them and construct your own (on paper and/or in imagination). Also you should know how to ‘translate’ the dates into the centuries. In most cases, centuries will work for you just fine.

Important: Think through all the dates and centuries. Have Timeline before you when studying or reviewing material. Eventually you should be able to envision the timelines.

Do not memorize the centuries mechanically – always picture them on the Timeline.

What I expect you to know for sure is a chronological order of the periods/styles and, of course, of civilizations.

Example for Greece: Geometric period came first, next one was Archaic period, then – Classical ; and the last one – Hellenistic .

No need to say that you should remember the chronological order of the civilizations themselves (see the 1st column in the charts above):

Civilizations: ..…- Aegean civilizations – Greek– Etruscan – Roman – Byzantine

MASTEREPIECE CHART

 Always have your book open to observe the pictures.

 Practice filling in the charts from memory. You can print them or you can do it working with the file document.

 Use a pencil with printed copies. Then you can erase your first attempt and repeat the check.

 Do the Chart more than one time. Or at least read the titles (while blocking the other two columns) and double check yourself whether you

(1) can imagine the work and (2) name the culture and period.

If you can do it – your success on the test is guaranteed.

Go for it!

This is the kind of association chain we should form when we study:

Kouros – Greek – Archaic period

Thus, if I say “Parthenon” or – it should come to mind immediately:

Parthenon – Greek – Classical period

Use the chart below to practice. Put in the second column one of the following cultures:

Greek Etruscan Roman Early Christian Byzantine .

Fight the temptation to simply copy Info from the guide or book.

Yet it would betray the purpose of this exercise and will not help you in preparation.

Practice-practice- practice!

 I do not ask you to remember the exact titles of artworks or spell the artists’ names. Although, it will be very good if you know them.

 Do not forget about the terms. The architectural terms are a must (you have them in your guides).

This is the way I would like you to “archive” your knowledge.

Another memory technique – highlight the rows (titles, etc.) from different periods (or cultures) with different colors (one period/or culture – one color).
