In Module 3, the origin of the atmosphere was discussed. During the course of earth’s history the earth’s atmosphere did not remain static. The atmosphere is a dynamic system and its components changed throughout earth’s history, which in turn effected the oceanic composition. Along with this change both plant and animals adapted or became extinct largely due to changes in atmospheric and oceanic conditions.
For your first writing assignment, armed with the knowledge that the atmosphere changed through time, discuss the atmosphere of the late Cretaceous (end of the dinosaur era) and how it may have contributed to the extinction events that occurred at the end of this era.
Bonus: How do scientists determine the composition of ancient atmospheres?
Use references from articles, online sources or in textbooks to research the Cretaceous atmosphere. Make sure you cite your references and include a list of them in this writing assignment.
