30 Jun THE BODY BY STEPHEN KING
Discuss three hilarious moments from The Body by Stephen King and why these moments are funny
Instruction Given: The Body is a richly layered story that has lots of comical moments. Explore three hilarious moments and analyze why these moments are funny.
Essay Format: 5 Paragraphs (Intro, Body Paragraph 1,2,3, Conclusion) Point,Proof,Comment
You should begin work on your group final project. You will find your groups assigned. As a group, you will prepare what you consider a final polished paper and post it in the discussion area for
peer review by members of your own group. Work with a partner and help each other to perfect your assigned sections.
You can also work on an ether pad collaboration, which means everyone can work on the same paper together. To start a collaboration, click the left hand menu button Collaborations and select
the Ether Pad function, then select your group number. A new window will open that only your group can see. Remember to copy paste and save your work into a word file just in case Ether Pad
erases your work. Once you have completed your work, you must post it in the discussion area for the peer review points if you are using the Ether Pad to discuss everything. I cannot grade the
Ether Pad area, so copy and paste your work if you choose this method of communication.
Now it is time to synthesize all you have learned this semester and anchor in all the concepts and ideas we have been studying. Complete this project with at least one good paragraph for each
point or example. Make sure you write an introduction and a conclusion, cite your sources and include a personnel sheet (who did what).
There should be 3-4 people in your group. If not, someone will need to cover the extra section. I suggest you divide the work as follows:
1. Introduction, Conclusion, Citations, Personnel Sheet
2. Background information on water issues
3. Faulty arguments used about water usage and lawn maintenance
4. Symbolism of water and green lawns and plants in general.
5. Superstitions or cultural biases regarding water, plants and lawns
6. Plant Research
Introduction- This should grab the readers attention and make them want to read the paper. It should also include an overview of what the reader will encounter in your essay.
Part 1: Water and Lawn Issues
1. Summarize Southern Californias water issues including the symbolism of water,
2. What are three faulty arguments people use to waste water? You may research this by talking with people that have traditional lawns, looking for scholarly work online or by thinking
about your own resistance to replacing your lawn.
• Example: “If I can pay for the water, I should be able to use it.” This is faulty logic of the straw man variety. We are all running out of water and you wont be able to pay for what we do
not have.
3. What cultural or prejudicial stereotypes are at play in insisting on having a green lawn? List at least three. What does a green lawn symbolize for people?
• Example: My grandpa comes from Europe where a green lawn is a status symbol. He fears his property value will go down if there is no lawn.
4. What superstitions can you uncover about lawns and gardens? You may need to interview people to gain at least three examples
• Example: My Southeast Asian relatives believe that banana trees are bad luck because they harbor the spirits of dead people
Part 2: Persuasive Essay and Plant Suggestions
1. Make a good case for replacing lawns xeriscaped gardens. Write your essay in persuasive style, countering the three faulty arguments you have uncovered in Part 1.
• Example: “I think dry gardens are really ugly and it will lower my home value”. The argument used here is prejudiced stereotyping based on faulty information and statistics. In reality,
xeriscaped gardens can be colorful, lush and full, cost less to maintain and will raise the house value. You might even include a picture to support your conclusions. Remember that pictures and
illustrated essays usually create more reader interest and score higher grades.
2. Research the three California native plants you chose at Rancho and write a paragraph about each one, including why they would be a great substitute for a lawn. You must include pictures of
each. This is important. Your goal is to educate and if you do not include illustrations, how will the reader know what you are talking about?
3. Include the symbolism for each plant. If you cannot find any literature on the symbolism of your plants, think about the plants characteristic and make up your own symbolic content for
each.
• Example: The yucca plant stands straight and tall and can be seen from far away on our local mountain slopes. The casual name for yucca is “Lords Candle”. Because the flowers are
bright waxy yellow and glow in the sunshine, they symbolism the light of religion and call people to think of candles lit in church.
Conclusion- The conclusion should reiterate what the reader has learned and provide some interesting and insightful observations about the overall topic. Writing a good conclusion is an art
form and it is the last impression the reader has of your work (before grading!). Take some time to craft the conclusion carefully.
Citations- web addresses are OK here too
Personnel Sheet who did what. Remember if some person lets your group down you must cover their part, no excuses! You must let me know and you can fire them from your group.
Finally, take into consideration the comments you received from your peer review. Polish and revise your group project until it is as perfect as you can make it! Make sure that your paper is
submitted with one font style, one size font and in great format shape (double spaced!), including the overall word count. Include a separate sheet indicating who in your group did what.
OVERALL- 2000 word minimum with resource citations

Each member of your group should post your assigned section for peer review. Please post what you believe to be your final version here by the due date. This will give the other group members
a chance to make comments. If you do not post your paper on time, you will lose 20/40 points.
You will work within your group to help each person polish their grammar and perfect each section. Remember this is a group grade so you have a good motivation to help each other!
You will have a few days to make insightful and helpful suggestions for improvement. Please contribute some helpful suggestions for improvement, including grammar, content and style. Be
specific!!!! You will be graded on how detailed and how helpful your feedback is.
20 points will be assigned for posting your sections on time and 20 points will be assigned for helpful comments to other group members. Be specific and include details on how to improve the
writing and organization, including grammar.
Now is the time to determine whether any group member has copied/plagiarized their section of the paper. Use Turnitin to determine this. Remember that once a paper is turned in with your
name on it, regardless of whether you wrote the copied section or not, YOU are responsible and will suffer the consequences of a zero on the final paper, a lowered overall grade and in extreme
circumstances, an F in the class.
give page numbers of direct quotes if these are used and a list of references in alphabetical order needs to be given at the end.
I will upload an attachment of the excel file with all the data collected then with that file you can formulate the graphs and tables. The excel file consists of all participants from my module (25
females, 3 males). Please analyse the data from this file to test your hypotheses.
