Discussion Class Overview  Results Review  Discussion Overview  Pass back papers / Check Pre-labs  All late papers due by class next Tuesday (half credit maximum) Lab 11 Review  Don’t forget to say if hypothesis was supported or not!  YOUR HYPOTHESIS SHOULD BE IN THE PAST TENSE (WOULD v. WILL)  Reporting Stats  Needed M and SD for significant T-Test/ANOVA only  Italicize stat letters (p, r, t, F) and remember spaces  Be careful where you are getting #s from!!   Figures  See lab manual for examples (if significant) Needed to reference Figure in text  Need to have Figure # and a caption DISCUSSION Key Points Of Discussion Section 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.  Restate your hypotheses/state whether or not they were supported Discuss your results Link back to your previously cited literature Discuss explanations for your findings (x1) Discuss limitations (x2) Discuss future directions (x2) You are going to use both present and past tense for this section of the paper 1. Hypotheses  State Hypotheses  Say whether or not they were supported  This can be taken from the Results section (if you got full credit)  Past tense 2. Discuss findings  Explain your results in words  What do your findings mean about the relationship between your IV and DV?  Do not make assumptions about the population, just stick to your sample  E.g. “In the current sample, social media usage was independent from self-esteem.”  Do not include statistics here  Past tense 3. Previous Literature  Relate  your findings back to the previously cited literature You need to do this for both hypotheses  Correctly CITE BOTH of the articles that you found for your literature review  NOTE: Since you’ve already introduced the articles in your Introduction, you can use et al. (unless it is just one or two authors)  Check  Describe  previous PPTs and OWL Purdue for guidance how your results fit into the previous research. You can be a little creative in your answers if it isn’t clear cut.  When talking about the results from previous literature and your study, use past tense.  When discussing whether or not they fit with your findings, this can be in either past tense or present tense (whatever makes the most sense). 4. Potential Explanation for Results  Taking into account whether or not your findings are in line with previous literature, think about some possible explanations for your results.  This should relate to the constructs you are studying (e.g., social media and self-esteem), NOT your study design  Remember  to avoid causal language Ideas:  If your results support previous literature, then maybe there is a relationship between your IV and your DV   Or maybe something else is responsible for the findings If your results contradict previous literature, then give a potential reason for that This is different from a limitation because you are discussing more generally the relationship between your IV and your DV Past/Present Tense 5. Limitations  You need 2 limitations  Need to include what the limitation is AND why you consider it a limitation  Limitations are issues that couldn’t be avoided OR things that happened during the study that weren’t anticipated.  Sample size is NOT a limitation.  Hint: Think about how you collected data, who you collected data from, and what potential problems could have arisen.  Past/Present tense. 6. Future Directions  You need 2 future directions  Knowing what you know now, what is the next logical step in your line of research?  Be realistic. Assume you’re doing a legitimate research study  Hints:  How can you fix your limitations in another study?  If findings were significant, how can you expand upon this literature?  Be specific.  Past/Present Tense. Final Notes Turn in: – Grading Rubric – Discussion Section – Reference Draft  During class, ask specific questions so that we can accurately and quickly answer your questions  We are happy to check citations  You will lose points for citations if you don’t give me a draft of your References …
