Introduction
The trillions of cells in a mammal’s body are its cellular level of organization. Although there are about 100 different types of cells, only like cells make up a tissue. A tissue is a group of specialized cells performing a similar function. We will see that the four basic types of tissue in an animal’s body are epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscular tissue, and nervous tissue. An organ contains various types of tissues arranged in a particular fashion. In other words, the structure and function of an organ are dependent on the tissues it contains. The many examples given throughout this chapter will help you understand why it is sometimes said that tissues, not organs, are the structural and functional units of the body. Several organs make up an organ system, and the organs of the system work together to perform necessary functions for the organism.
While the examples that you will be studying in this lab are from vertebrates, and more often than not from mammals, you should keep in mind that these general types of tissues, with exceptions that will be emphasized, are found throughout the animal kingdom. In short, the purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the general structures and functions of animal tissues.
Animal tissues include four basic types: epithelium, connective(or supportive), muscular, and nervous. Every human organ contains each of these four tissues.
When you have finished this lab you should be able to:
Give the defining characteristics of each of the four major tissue types.
Describe the differences among the types of epithelial tissues and identify them.
Describe the differences among the types of connective tissues and identify them.
Identify the three types of muscular tissue and describe the differences among them.
Identify the parts of neurons and supporting cells described in this lab and explain their function.
State where each of these tissues is found and what its function is.
