Our perspective and focus in this course is organizational behavior, management, and leadership through the elements of uncertainty, complexity, chaos, and self-organizing with the over-arching theme of Innovation. The influences that are discussed in one or more units are – innovation, emerging technologies, changing markets, organizational culture, the world/global economy, competitive pressures, various constraints, and cross-functionality. The focus of the final paper is a research question/project that you have been or are currently involved in at your current employer or a previous organization with which you have worked. The topic will be based on the materials reviewed in class, in the Units, and outside sources.
Begin by choosing a process, service or product line in your organization that you know intimately and that you believe is either too complex, not or barely profitable, or is critical to the future of your organization and should be improved. If you are in a non-profit organization you will likely want to substitute profitability for efficiency. You will then:
Fully describe the process, service, or product you will be discussing (while there is no minimum or maximum length of this description, it should be complete so that someone who does not know anything about it will have a good enough understanding to follow your analysis).
Indicate the profitability (or efficiency) of the process, service, or product.
What is (or was) your role related to your project?
What are the key issues?
Having identified the problem, you proceed to develop a solution that will address the previously identified issue(s). Base your solution of the materials you learned in this course.
Make sure you address these points:
Identify the core problem(s) and identify it by completing the sentence stem, “The problem(s) is/are…”
Research the problem(s) and identify the root causes.
Identify literature (both, course materials and your own library research) that will provide a conceptual and or theoretical understanding of the problem and help develop a solution. The number of required sources depends on the nature of the project. More is usually better. You need to include all sources that help you in the analysis of the problem and identification of a solution.
Propose a solution and explain why that solution will solve the issues.
Propose an implementation plan including timeline.
