Affirmative action (AA) refers to the taking of positive steps to hire and promote people from groups who were previously discriminated against (Carroll & Buchhholtz, 2006, p. 595). The concept of AA was first introduced by President Lyndon Johnson who assigned an executive order to acquire firms dealing with the federal government to hire minority individuals. During President Lyndon administration, the government was not committed to AA until President Richard Nixon revived the idea of racial hiring preferences.
