26 Jul WHAT IS CLOSE READING/LITERARY INTERPRETATION?
This assignment requires that you develop an argument that explores at least two texts studied
in the course. You are to write a traditional academic essay. You
must be able to show originality of thought and demonstrate your own close
reading/interpretation of your chosen texts. As such, although secondary sources can be used,
they are not required, and keep in mind that any over-reliance on sources (including relying on
lecture material) will negatively affect your grade.
General Information
What is close reading/literary interpretation?
Everyday in class as we’re dissecting a text, we’re engaging in the process of close reading. So
please use what we do in class as a model for what’s expected of you in this assignment.
Close reading can be defined as follows: “the detailed and subtle analysis of the complex
interrelations and ambiguities (multiple meanings) of the components within a work” (Abrams,
A Glossary of Literary Terms. 8th ed. 189). So, what this means is you need to find the features of
your texts that may prove ripe for interpreting (is there a particular motif that carries through your
text? Does the narrative structure or perspective have a particular significance? Are there
particularly meaningful metaphors and/or word choices that are being used? Etc.). Remember, it
is not enough to explore plot, characterization, or historical context. You need to delve deeper
and explore the significance of the text’s particular features. So, your aim isn’t to tell your reader
about what happens in the text; your aim is to tell your reader what the significance of a
particular element is.
Originality
The best essays/projects will be able to show originality in your interpretations and arguments.
Therefore, you should not repeat lecture material, particularly in terms of your interpretations of
the texts (you might, however, choose to put to use some of our theoretical concepts. Remember,
I already know what I think about the texts; this is your chance to show me what you think.
Remember too that you need to demonstrate your integrity as a scholar in this essay/project.
