What is the purpose of jargon, slang, and colloquialisms? Provide an example of 5 words used at your current or past workplace or in your personal life where others may not know the meaning. Provide the words and the meaning of these words. How are these terms useful to you? What do they add to the communication with your peers? Using the text reading to support your points, explain the possible limitations of these words.
Growing and Developing…All Day Long! (least 200–250 words)
Growth and development require the incredible coordination of literally millions of cells. What type of communication system would best serve this large-scale, whole-body process? What might be compromised if growth were regulated instead by a more immediate system?
What Is Nonverbal Communication? (least 200–250 words)
Nonverbal communication replaces, reinforces, and contradicts verbal communication. Describe a time when nonverbal communication caused you to misinterpret the message in a work situation (explain the type of nonverbal cue). Then, using the guidelines for improving nonverbal communication, explain how you can keep this from occurring again?
Oh…my crazy lymphatic system! (least 200–250 words)
Marie sat quietly in the back of the class feeling relaxed, even though this was her first college class. “Here goes; this is the beginning of my future,” she excitedly thought. As the teacher walked to the front of the room, Marie suddenly felt dizzy and broke into a cold sweat.
Marie was undergoing the first phase of the GAS. Although she did not consciously realize it, she was stressed over beginning her college career. As the teacher walked in, Maries body began the “fight or flight” response of the alarm stage. Energy reserves are being mobilized, blood glucose levels are rising, and epinephrine levels are increasing. Her blood pressure, respiratory and heart rate are increasing, and her sweat glands are stimulated. In situations like this one, the stress response is inappropriate and Marie is experiencing a panic attack.
What was happening to her? What is the natural course of these events?
When Good Discoveries Go Bad: Antibiotics (least 200–250 words)
Bacteria are a type of prokaryote that are absolutely everywhere in the world, from dirt to food, and even inside other living creatures. In the past 60 years, scientists have developed some incredible drugs, called antibiotics, to fight bacterial infections. These drugs have saved millions of lives.
There is, however, a downside to the development of antibiotics, their overuse. Since the late 1970s, antibiotics have been prescribed more and more, and for less and less serious infections, which has led to many bacteria developing a resistance to these drugs. When this happens, bacteria very quickly lose their vulnerability to these antibiotics, leaving humans once again susceptible to infection.
For this reason, many people think that the over prescription of antibiotics by doctors and their addition in products like antibacterial soaps and kitchen wipes, have led to the evolution of “superbugs” that cannot be killed by normal antibiotics. Others take a different view, believing that antibiotics are chemicals like any other, and they should be allowed to be prescribed at-will and included in household products.
What do you think? Who should be in control of regulating the use of antibiotics, if anyone? Use what you have learned in the course as well as any outside research you do to back up your responses during the week (you may want to start with this CDC website @ www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/index.html), and be sure to keep the conversation evolving by responding to several of your classmates postings throughout the week.
