Inquiry Questions:
Can literature represent a historical or cultural moment? Can it represent a culture or people? How does the text change for different people in different places over different time periods?
Purpose:
Inquiry #1 emphasized the assorted ways a reader responds to a text. Inquiry #2 will combine these approaches and extend the critical analysis to include historical and cultural contexts.
Using Junot Díaz’s novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, you will come up with a variety of questions about how this text is connected to history or cultural ideas. For example:
• How might readers in the Dominican Republic respond to this text compared with those in the United States? What about American citizens of Dominican descent?
• What is the role of history in this novel? How does it inform Oscar’s character?
• What is the role of pop culture? How does popular culture, and specifically scifi/fantasy culture, work in a story about a family from the Dominican Republic?
• What is the role of this novel in the larger U.S. American canon? Comparisons to other works of literature?
• What is the role of women or men in the novel? How does this help one understand themes about belonging, death, national or ethnic identity?
In other words, you will analyze how the text performs in connection with a particular historical or cultural perspective. You can choose which specific topic you want to research, but it needs to focus on how this novel functions within a specified historical or cultural context.
Tasks:
• 2A Research Blog
You will use the Niihka Blog function to write about at least 5 sources that inform your own questions about the novel. (See Research Blog directions below.) Additionally, you will comment on your peers’ posts to share resources and generate discussion.
• Proposal:
After your 2A research, you will write a 1-2 page proposal explaining the main sources you want to use in the research essay and what conclusions you will write about for your cultural or historical analysis. Again, see exact requirements below.
• 2B Research Essay:
This is where you will develop your inquiry question and research into a clearly articulated argument. Your essay should make a clear claim using evidence from both your research and the novel. Finally, it should connect to a larger “so what” idea about literature and history or culture.
