Sexual orientation has been a hot topic in the United States for over a decade now. First, chose a sexual orientation or identity that has historically been deemed deviant in the U.S. For instance, homosexual, bisexual, transgender, intersex, genderqueer, or any other with which you are familiar. Next, chose any medium of information exchange to analyze. This can be a magazine, book, television show, movie, website, blog, or social media application. Then, take a close look at the language that is used to portray the group you chose. Is it positive or negative? What about pictures or images associated with the group? Has the group been stigmatized? Are there stereotypes that are used by the media source you chose? How does the average American view members of this particular sexual orientation? Do they face forms of discrimination? If so, in what arenas of social life does this occur?
Lastly, discuss the theoretical implications of the messages you received. How is the media’s portrayal of this group functional? How does conflict theory play into this discussion? Specifically, why might it be more difficult for someone with a non-normative sexual orientation to achieve the same level of power, privilege, and reward and someone who is heterosexual? What about symbolic interaction? What kind of feelings or ideas pop into your head when you hear the term you are mentioning? How does the content you analyzed foster certain views of this group?
