Do Counsellors Identify The Need To Engage In Self Care?

To complete this assessment you must asses collection of qualitative data, conduct your own analysis of data, and prepare a research report, using APA formatting guidelines.

Specifically you will be required to;

ii. Succinct and brief overview of related research and theoretical underpinnings from the literature
iii. Provide a justification for the current research, via the identification of a gap in research
iv. Propose a research question
d. Method Section
i. Participants
ii. Details of the interview questions
iii. Procedures incorporating description of approach to analysis, incorporating description of the qualitative method, philosophical approached underpinning analytical framework, as well as other pertinent information for the conduct of qualitative research (e.g., how best practice principles for the conduct of qualitative research are incorporated)
e. Results Section
i. Thematic Analysis of the interview data
f. Discussion Section
i. Draw conclusions about the results
ii. Connect findings with existing research described in your introduction
iii. Identify limitations of the research
iv. Identify implications for practitioners and/or suggest directions for future research

Uses correct APA Style APA format and style and use of references are followed appropriately throughout.
Assessment 3- Data Collection (Attached)
Demographic Details
Note: Ideally in qualitative research, I want to have a diversity of views; the issue is not so that we can generalise our findings, but instead to gather in-depth information about an issue or concept. Ideally I would recruit a sample using purposive sampling; however, in reality most studies include participants recruited via a sample of opportunity. What we can do though is try to collect demographic information of participants, and then if we are lacking in a particular area, we can try then to purposively recruit to ensure we have some voices from that particular demographic. Again, its not about generalisation but gathering enough data so that we can say that we have reached data saturation (i.e. the point at which interviewing more people does not result in any new responses).
The following demographic data.
1. Age
2. Gender
3. Counselling experience (years or months)
4. If currently working in counselling, setting/client group(s)
5. Previous studies in counselling
Research Question
1. Do counsellors identify the need to engage in self-care?
Semi-structured interview schedule
Question 1. Looking forward to when you have finished your degree, imagine that you are working as a counsellor in a full-time role. What do you think will be your major challenges?

[What Im trying to do here is frame the question so that we see if, spontaneously, the counsellor mentions topics related to stress, burnout, or self-care. Of course, our sample will be biased because we have been primed!]

Question 2. When you think about working as a counsellor, have you ever thought that it might be a stressful occupation?

If responds yes: In what way do you think you might experience stress?
If no: Okay, lets explore this a bit further. Do you think that clients might bring with them particular issues that may invoke feelings of stress in you as a counsellor? OR, Imagine you are working in prisons with inmates who have committed violent crimes, how might you manage listening to stories that may be gruesome and/or involve trauma or violence?

Question 3. In some counselling roles, you may be required to work with clients who have experienced significant trauma, and in some instances, the client may have played a role in this trauma by committing violent acts towards others. In these situations, the literature suggests that counsellors are at high risk of certain stress related disorders. Do you know what these are?

Question 4. Have you heard of the following disorders occurring as a result of working as a counsellor?
Vicarious Trauma (if yes, can you describe the symptoms?)
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (if yes, can you describe the symptoms?)
Compassion Fatigue (if yes, can you describe the symptoms?)
Burnout (if yes, can you describe the symptoms?)
Secondary Traumatic Stress (if yes, can you describe the symptoms?)

Question 5. Do you have an understanding about what the term emotional labour means? Can you identify how this term may relate to counselling?

Question 6. As a counsellor, you should continue to engage in professional development. What kinds of activities do you think would be important to do?

Question 7: Have you heard about the concept of self-care? What do you think this means for counsellors?

Question 8: Have you thought about how you might engage in self-care as a counsellor?

Question 9: Do you think that for yourself that it will be important to engage in self-care?

Question 10; What kinds of things would you do?

Question 11: Do you think that there might exist barriers that will prevent you from engaging in self-care? What might these be?

Question 12. Can you think of ways that engaging in self-care could be promoted (e.g., by employers, training providers, counselling associations)

Question 13: Do you have any other comments to add?

Some guidance to assist you

Abstract
Introduction
NOT AN INTRODUCTION LIKE AN INTRODUCTION TO AN ESSAY. Specifically, you must include the following:
Commence with an introductory paragraph. What is the topic and why is it important to investigate this area of work?
Review relevant literature. What has been done, where, with whom, and how? In other words, you are providing the reader with an account of studies performed in order to lead to a synthesis regarding what is the state of the evidence at this point in time. it would be great if you could also include a few more from your own database search]
Provide a rationale leading to the proposal of your research question. On the basis of your review, what is the state of the evidence at this point in time what is known, and what is not known, and what is needed to be done in order to gather more knowledge/evidence? Within this rationale you should aim to identify any methodological shortcomings with previous research which you should attempt to overcome through your study.
Method
[Note that I have provided the headings and detail you need to put into this as per the next page.

Method
Participants
Insert a summary of the number of participants, their mean age, how many males and females, as well as other demographic data collected. (Attached)

Materials
Participants completed a series of open-ended questions about self-care on a discussion forum. Examples of questions were: [if you are using just a selection, then insert examples here; if using all then insert examples of questions related to general themed questions]. Participants also provided demographic data.

Procedure
Lecturer came up with a series of questions that aimed to tap into concepts relevant to self-care. These were posted onto the units HELP page, and students enrolled in the course, were asked to participate. No ethical approval was gained for the conduct of this study. Participants anonymity was not preserved. The lecturer collated the data in an Excel document, grouped according to each question.

Results
Data Analysis
Here you need to describe how you analysed the data. For instance you would say something like: Data were analysed using Braun and Clarkes (2006) six stepped approach. Describe as much detail as relevant here about the approach. If you like you can include details of a phenomenological or philosophical perspective see article Tong et al. ] You can code the data for themes across the data set, or in response to particular questions, or separately for all questions. A code is simply a word, or a thought you may about the data. The best way to do this would be write comments in a column next to the quotes and then continue to do this until you start to themes emerging.
Overview of Results
You can provide an overall general synthesis describing the type of themes that emerged. You would then proceed to describing the results in detail, using examples of quotes to support the themes.
Actual Results you might like to use theme headings
You can insert themes into a table, or into a figure whatever you prefer. The idea is that you provide examples of the themes via the depiction of quotes from participants. So you might say something like When participants were describing their knowledge of self-care there were 3 subthemes that grouped within an overarching related to self-care. For example, participants emphasised xxxxx when discussing self-care. A participant responded: insert quote. If you have different responses, you might say. Whilst the majority of participants suggested that x played a role, there were some exceptions. For instance x, suggested that x was more of an issue when describing self-care.
Discussion
Note that you do not want to re present the actual quotes here. Instead, you want to re orient the reader to the research question. Then state the results generally. Following this you would start to look at how your results fit with research previously conducted, or how they differ. It is important to identify any novel findings that your study presents. You can then spend a paragraph or two noting the limitations of the study, as well as a paragraph on the strengths. Finally, you might like to comment on how the results of the work can be used in practice and/or how or where future research is needed.
