A multinational shipping and logistics company headquartered in Brazil, NatShipping, is no stranger to big data. It has increasingly captured and tracked freight movements and transactions since the 1980s. Today, the company tracks data on over 19.9 million packages per day for over 8.92 million customers and services an average of 75 million online tracking requests per day. The company stores over 17.32 petabytes of data.
NatShipping keeps track of the overall movements of freight movements. This data includes total shipping time to destination, the time between package centers, and weight and volume of the package. They use this historical information to provide arrival time estimates and to set the routes for shipping services, such as 2-day domestic shipping and 3-5 day domestic ground shipping. They do not currently capture or utilize data analytics in any other manner.
You are the director of the small, but instrumental, Research and Development (R&D) team responsible for all technology innovation within the company. The company has telematics sensors on its 65,000 vehicles that can capture speed, direction, braking, and drivetrain performance.
