WHAT OUTCOMES WILL BE ANALYZED AND HOW THEY WILL BE ANALYZED?

WHAT OUTCOMES WILL BE ANALYZED AND HOW THEY WILL BE ANALYZED?

Last week, you determined the study design for your project and planned how you will measure change. This week you will determine how the data will be analyzed, both from a statistical perspective and your evaluation of the significance of the outcomes.

Analyzing data from a statistical perspective can be both exciting and daunting. As you may recall from statistics courses taken long ago, the study design, the clinical question, and the level of measurement dictate the type of statistical analysis you will use. Figures 18-11 and 18-12 in Chapter 18 from The Practice of Nursing Research (Burns & Grove, 2009) provide an overview of the relationship of these items to help you determine the appropriate statistical test. The results of the statistical analysis are typically presented in tables in a written report, and important results are then expanded upon in the narrative results section.

Providing a narrative interpretation of what the results of the statistical analysis indicates is an important step that concludes the study. At this juncture, the researcher takes a close look at the data to organize, analyze, and interpret the results. Decisions are made as to how the intervention changed outcomes, and the role this particular intervention has in determining best practice. Since you will not actually implement what you are proposing, this step will involve planning for statistical analysis only.

As you wrap-up the planning phase of your project and you have a better understanding of the steps involved, now is the time to develop a timeline for each step and the project as a whole. Developing a timeline will keep you on track and provide reminders for the various steps.

The cost of this project should also be considered at this juncture. What are the costs in materials? Salaries? Will you need funding for your project? While most projects are subsumed by the institution and considered part of your job, time away from other duties may be a hidden cost to the institution. All these considerations go into the planning phase to avoid surprises later on.

Burns, N., & Grove, S. K. (2009). The practice of nursing research: Appraisal, synthesis, and generation of evidence (6th ed.). St. Louis, MO: Saunders.

This week you identified the appropriate statistical analysis for your study proposal and considered how you will present the results. You also gave some thought to the timeline for and costs of your project, both obvious and hidden, which can impact your ability to carry out the project.

Assignment 2: Statistical Analysis

For this week’s Dropbox assignment, you will begin to develop Part 5 of your project proposal: Analyzing change. In your discussion, include the following points:

• State your clinical question.

• Briefly state the intervention you will implement. While these two items are not typically included in Part 5, doing so will help orient faculty so appropriate feedback can be provided.

• What outcomes will be analyzed and how they will be analyzed?

• Describe the statistical analysis you will do relating this to the data collection tools you plan to use.

• Indicate the types of demographic data you plan to report on your participants as well.

• Briefly discuss the outcomes expected should this project be implemented.

After receiving feedback from faculty, incorporate the appropriate content into your project proposal.

Assignment 2 Grading Criteria Maximum Points

States clinical question and describes clinical intervention 5

Describes statistical analysis chosen 15

Relates statistical analysis to method of data collection 20

Used current APA style guidelines consistently and accurately. 10

Total: 50

In the 8th week, you will complete the planning phase of the study itself and determine how you will analyze your results (statistical analysis). All of you will be able to keep it very simple and use t-tests to determine whether or not your results are statistically significant. You will determine how you will present/explain the results to interested stakeholders. You will also give some thought to the timeline for and costs of your project. If it takes too long or costs too much, you may need to alter the plan or seek financial help. I believe we have worked together to keep it simple, inexpensive and easily do-able. The object is to learn the process of an EB project and testing.
