21 Jun WHAT TIME PERIOD IS REPRESENTED IN THE FILM OR NOVEL?
Instead of a book review, you may choose to do a Response Paper. Your text will help you to begin analyzing movies and works of fiction for their value in understanding the past. Your paper should begin with an argument about how the film or piece of fiction either accurately depicts or distorts the historical record. All of the movies presented in your text book are good possibilities for you to use to complete your paper. I have included a few others that I think are interesting. Did the film or novel accurately depict the events, values or mood of the era? Why or why not? Be sure to use concrete evidence from history to make your points, and provide citations for your historical research. This means that you will need to conduct some research from articles, books and reputable web sites. Be sure to cite your sources. 5. Did the film or novel provide you with any new information that you know, have since found to be, or believe to be accurate? Again, you may need to do some research to include this information in your essay properly and convincingly. You need to compare the historical elements in the film or novel with actual history to write a proper response paper. 6. If the novel was written at the time of the depicted events, how did it particularly serve to enlighten you about the era? Does the author have an agenda to promote? If so, what is it and why does the author use a piece of fiction to try and accomplish his or her goals? Once again, use concrete evidence from history, along with appropriate citations, to support your ideas here. 7. If the novel was written or the movie produced long after the events it depicts, did it unnecessarily intrude more modern values beliefs, prejudices and assumptions into its interpretation of past events? Again, use support and citations to defend your points. Contrast the depiction against the historical record as you have learned it. 8. Would you recommend this movie or novel as a medium for the understanding of history? Why or why not?
