The government and President Nixon’s actions cost thousands of lives. “At the same time, to please American public opinion that had turned against the war, Nixon announced a phased withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Vietnam” (Moss 184). We were never fully committed to stopping North Vietnam and we paid the ultimate price. Troops were dying for what seemed to be, a senseless cause. Let’s face it, the Vietnam War was an ugliest moment in history for America. President Nixon had plenty of opportunities to make peaceful agreements and pull America out of South Vietnam. Instead, Nixon deliberately escalated the war by bombing Cambodia and sending more soldiers into North Vietnam. He even “turned the Air force loose on the North” during Christmas (Moss 187). All these senseless actions were for almost nothing in the long run as America no longer believed in the war, and accepted defeat by pulling out of Vietnam.
