Leaving Mother Lake: Humans are extremely flexible in social organization and kinship. Describe how living in a matrilineal kinship structure affects different areas of a female ego’s life, such as access to resources, political alliances, marriage, and religion. How is this different from dominant American culture? How does this influence who has access to power? Your response should include a discussion of values in matrilineal societies with specific examples from Leaving Mother Lake. Introduction: This semester we will be reading four very different texts and ethnographies on culture. Your task is to develop a well-written 4 page paper for three of these texts. Therefore, you will have your choice of 3 out of 4 questions.*If you choose to respond to the questions for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and Tales from Facebook, these will both be due on Mon. Dec. 9.*Responses should model the following format: 1 inch margins, double spaced, Times New Roman. Pollan, Michael. 2008. In Defense of Food: an Eater’s Manifesto. Penguin Press, NYC. ISBN: 9780143114963. Mathieu, And Christine. 2005. Leaving Mother Lake: A Childhood at the Edge of the World. Back Bay Books, London. ISBN: 9780349117584. Fadiman, Anne. 1997. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, NY. ISBN: 9780374525644. Miller, Daniel. 2011. Tales from Facebook. Polity Press, Cambridge. ISBN: 9780745652108. The Questions: For full credit, your essays should respond to all aspects of essay questions. 1. In Defense of Food. Humans are the only living species which need assistance deciding what to eat and consultation for maintaining a healthy diet. Most cultures around the world have welldeveloped food cultures designed to maintain health, embody cultural values, and use locally available foods-those traditionally available in the environment. Why is the standard American agricultural system and diet so poorly adjusted to our nutritional needs and long-term health? Your response should consider culture change, technology, commodification of food and any other variables you consider important. What are the long-term outcomes of maintaining our current food culture and what individual and political actions can be used to effect a positive culture change? 2. Leaving Mother Lake: Humans are extremely flexible in social organization and kinship. Describe how living in a matrilineal kinship structure affects different areas of a female ego’s life, such as access to resources, political alliances, marriage, and religion. How is this different from dominant American culture? How does this influence who has access Adelphi University Anthropology Department Prof. Krasinski Fall 2015 2 to power? Your response should include a discussion of values in matrilineal societies with specific examples from Leaving Mother Lake. 3. Americans are enculturated to believe that American ‘Western’ medicine is the only important information for health and healing. What are the many aspects of health as demonstrated in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down? Your responses should include specific cultural values, cultural differences, language barriers, health facility and experiences. What are the ways in which American health care professionals can benefit from the example of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down to improve health care outcomes in multicultural settings? 4. The Barrel Model of Culture shows how when a change in the technological, social, or ideological aspects of culture occurs or a change in environment, there are corresponding changes to other aspects of culture. In what ways has Facebook changed one culture. You may select a culture based on readings in the text and are not required to focus on dominant American culture. For full credit, provide specific examples from Tales of Facebook and address each portion of the Barrel Model of Culture. I. Find Sources: Research peer reviewed journal articles, books, or government reports that relate to your disaster case studies for your presentation topics. In addition to your text and additional course readings on Blackboard, you can find peer-reviewed references which clearly discuss archaeological research through the Fordham University library (JSTOR, Ebsco Host) or through Google Scholar. A primary reference is one written, peer reviewed, and evaluated by scientists and written for scientists. For instance, New York Times and National Geographic are not considered primary sources, but Science, Nature, Journal of Archaeological Science, American Antiquity, Natural History, and Current Anthropology are primary sources. Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference. Avoid using webpages that are not affiliated with journals. For example, a university or museum webpage is not peer reviewed-any administrator can add information to a webpage. This does not mean that the information is incorrect, but the quality of the information is limited and not vetted. You will be required to use a minimum of 5 peer-reviewed references from Journals only in your research, but the more the better. These sources should reflect the broad-based nature of your research of the hazards, vulnerabilities, political economy, preparedness, and response to disasters. II. References How to Cite Your Sources Number each source and include its full reference, cited in the APA format (Google Cite function has this as an example). Author last name, first initial. Publication year. Article title. Journal title in italics volume number(issue number):start page-end page. Adelphi University Anthropology Department Prof. Krasinski Fall 2015 3 Stuart, A. J Kosintsev, P. A., Higham, T. F. G., & Lister, A. M. (2004). Pleistocene to Holocene extinction dynamics in giant deer and woolly mammoth. Nature 431(7009): 684-689. III. Follow these Tips for Better Writing Writing is a process which requires reading, editing, and re-writing. The following are tips to more sophisticated writing. Following these tips will result in a better written assignment and grade. •When editing your paper, replace colloquial sayings with shorter and more powerful/specific synonyms (e.g., work together can be replaced with collaborate, come up with vs. develop). • ‘in order’ is never necessary-edit it out of your annotations. •Do not include quotes. These are more effective when paraphrased in your words and cited. •Except for citations (author year), keep bibliographic information in the references cited section only. Do not include article titles and journal titles within the text of your paper-this is why we use a works cited/bibliography section at the end of the paper. This allows the author to ‘tighten up’ writing and get right to ‘the meat of the matter’. • Avoid including affiliation and position of the author. When using peer reviewed material, your ideas are legitimized. That someone works for Harvard or is a professor does not prove the work is scientifically sound and does not help legitimize your writing. While this is common in journalism, the use of peer-reviewed material makes this practice unnecessary and does not critically evaluate the content of the paper. • More is not better. Quality, not quantity. Do not fill your paper with fluff. A tighter, better written, better research paper on the shorter length is always preferable to more pages of fluff. You will not earn additional points for a longer paper. • Be specific, not vague. E.g., 10 patients were tested for celiac disease because they presented symptoms such as weight loss, lose stool vs. this article studies celiac disease. •Data are always plural (e.g., these data – correct; this data-singular and incorrect). The singular is datum (verb tenses apply).
