The purpose of this assignment is for you to get a glimpse of how a bit of the mathematics we
have studied throughout the quarter was developed in its historical context. I hope that you will
come to understand some of the process and insight involved in its development and that you,
additionally, gain an understanding of the people, reasons, and methods behind it all while also
gaining a little deeper understanding of the subject matter.
You should look through the list of historical projects (there are a total of 14 different projects
listed under Modules in Canvas) and pick one that strikes your interest. I think it is important
that you at least skim a few before deciding on one as you will be spending a few weeks on this.
After you have decided on one, read the entire project and choose:
1. Write a 1000 word essay about the mathematics, people, and historical context in it.
OR
2. Complete the project (i.e. work through all the exercises listed)
OR
3. (Extra Credit) Complete both 1. and 2. (using the same historical project for both)
Essay Guidelines:
The essay should be a minimum of 1000 words. Please type your essay using 12 point
font and double space it; I like Calibri font but you may use any that is easy to read.
I ask that you do a little additional research by looking up at least two additional
references, specifically:
1. At least one published mathematical source not listed in the project references.
2. At least one published historical source not listed in the project references.
Please cite your sources. I like the Chicago style but you may use any style you prefer.
This is an expository assignment intended for you to show me that you read, and gave
some thought to, the historical project. The following list of questions to consider is
neither a comprehensive nor limiting list. I include it only to give you some idea of
where to start, but you are welcome and encouraged to write about what YOU found
most interesting in your reading/investigation.
o What is the specific topic of study?
o Who was involved in its development? Was it a single individual or were there
several people involved? Did they compete, collaborate, or were they isolated?
o Why was this person, or anyone else, interested in the mathematics being
developed?
o Are the language (not as in German, Russian, etc. but rather consider, e.g., that
Euclid said 6 is measurable by 2 because three lengths of 2 equal 6), symbols, and
methods used during the development and early use similar to those used in
modern times?
o How was the math used after being developed? How is the math used today?
o Did you learn anything new? Maybe even try to imagine a novel use of the math.
