Good Morning Yvette and Dr. Crawford,

This morning I will be sharing some insights regarding our new friend, Roel. Roel finds himself in a situation, and needs some help on career development. Additionally, I will provide some recommended interventions in order to help Roel get on the right career track.

As background to Roel, he is a college sophomore who needs to declare a major. We find that Roel tends to impulsive to the point of not seeking additional information, or considering the ramifications of his decisions. He comes to me for help deciding on a major. My concern is to not only help him declare a major, but also help him make a decision that is well researched and will suite his career aspirations for years to come.

In reviewing Roel’s situation, it very much reminded me of “Chaos” in that his life seemed to move from one event to another without any real plan. In light of this, I immediately thought of Bright and Pryor’s (2011) Chaos theory of Careers. In essence, Bright and Pryor (2011) state that due to the dynamics of life today, life (and careers) can be quite unpredictable. Given this, career planning cannot be a set, or stagnate activity. Career planning will be subject to a whole host of variables some of which include the labor market, where they live, health and family to name a few.

Bright and Pryor (2011) classify individuals into 4 distinct categories: point, pendulum, torus and strange. Roel would be considered a “strange” since he tends to be somewhat chaotic and moves from one situation to another, sometimes in a dramatic fashion. Knowing that Roel is a strange, a career counselor can then start a process of helping Roel understand his motivations and identify past patterns that might be useful in finding a suitable major. Moreover, Bright and Pryor (2011) recommend that persons with a strange pattern be supplied with an assessment tool such as that developed by Savickas, et al. (2009) that would allow Roel a mechanism to provide a narrative of his past interests and ambitions so that a skilled career counselor can then narrow down potential career paths that Roel would be successful in pursuing.

Roel is like many individuals today. There has never been as many occupations or job categories to choose from than those offered today. Life is also happening at an increasingly accelerating pace. Given these two dynamics, it is very normal to be stuck on career decisions. However, with expert guidance, Roel should be just fine determining his path in life.

· Case-Study of Ronald

After reading the case study, select one of the recent theories from Chapter 3 and write a response indicating how you would apply the theory to describe the career development of Ronald. What interventions might work in this case?

In this chapter, we have read about very many interesting theories that can apply to different situations which relate to career development. In the case of Ronald whom we are specifically focusing on, Ronald seems to be having a very difficult time what to do with his life and which career path to take up since he always thought he would be a professional football player, but because of the injury, he has been unable to. He is having a hard time finding another alternative for football. Based on this scenario, I believe that the one theory that best applies to Ronald is the chaos theory of careers which was developed by Pryor and Bright in 2011. This is a theory which tries to turn chaos in an individual’s career life into clarity (Reed, 2016). This best applies to an individual who seems to have lot direction of their career path and what they are supposed to be doing regarding their career, and this is the exact thing happening to Ronald.  Ronald is going through a phase which is characterized by a lot of chaos as he is not clear on which path he ought to take. Just as the theory suggests what Ronald need to do is to embrace the uncertainty and allow himself to be more flexible in exploring careers that he thinks he might be interested in and this way he will end up finding something he would love to do. The intervention that needs to be taken and applied is helping Ronald apply the various principles suggested by this theory which can help him rediscover himself. These include being open minded, taking one step at a time even if they are baby steps, being curious and exploring and experimenting new things (Niles & Bowlsbey, 2013). By so doing he will be able to come out of the chaos situation by understanding other things he is interested in which he can develop a career from.

Hi Yvette,

Thank you for the update. It was not clearly marked in the text as a case study. But now I see what you mean. So with that, let’s talk about Ronald.

Ronald is quite like Roel in that he seems to be concerned about defining a career path. I have found that in Chaos theory, it is helpful to have the client provide a narrative of their past career experiences in order to identify patterns that might be helpful in setting a direction (Super, 1975). I kind of did the same thing mid-career on myself by identifying those points in my career where I was happiest, and then tried to find positions that aligned with those experiences. Since Ronald does supply so many interests and abilities, there are probably many majors that could support his career aspirations.

The Chaos theory does demonstrate the indecisiveness and uncertainty of where to go in the career but doesn’t describe a lot of us.  The other problem we can run into with clients is that they could have interest in a lot of things that do not relate at all. What happens if we have this type of client? What is the best way to guide the client?
